Meghan Markle, the former actress and Duchess of Sussex, has emerged as the top choice amongst Democrats if the party picks a woman as its candidate for the 2024 presidential election.

According to a poll conducted by the Washington-based Democracy Institute of Democratic Voters, 25% of respondents said that Meghan Markle would be the best for the job in the list of potential female runners.

She was joint first alongside Vice President Kamala Harris, also on 25%.

Hillary Clinton, who lost to Donald Trump in 2016, came next with 22% in the survey of 555 Democrats carried out from May 24 to May 26.

Further 18% backed Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, while 6% opted for Senator Elizabeth Warren, and 4% said others were undecided.

The poll results have sparked speculation that the former actress could one day make a bid for the White House.

Democracy Institute Director Patrick Basham told the Daily Express US that there is still an appetite for Meghan to be the Democratic candidate.

He said, “It’s a testament to two things.

One is that the fact that the choices that Democrats are having are not really the best right now.

They probably would go for a female candidate if Biden wasn’t in the picture.”

Mr. Basham said he does not believe Ms. Harris could win an election but is likely to be selected as the Democrats’ core support is amongst black women.

He argued that Ms. Clinton isn’t as popular as she was, although she still would be influential.

Ms. Ocasio-Cortez does not appear to be an obvious successor on the left, and Ms. Warren’s day has probably come and gone.

Mr. Basham went on to say, “So if you’re looking around and you’re a Democrat and you want a woman, or you’ve given the choice of which woman would you prefer, you’ve got this, the identical candidate, this biracial, young, attractive, telegenic celebrity who doesn’t have a political track record that can be taken apart of.

If you like the identity politics, if you like the victimhood card being played, if you think we actually need more of that, and many on the Democratic side do, then you say okay well why not her?

Because they’re thinking to themselves, who would give us the best chance against Trump or whoever?

And of course, Trump played the same card.

Try something different.

We keep losing on the Republican side, we keep losing.

Have someone who’s not in politics, who’s from outside the system, and Meghan is the one who would fit that, you know, fit that mold as well on that side.”

Mr. Biden’s sister Valerie Biden Owens last year invited the Duchess to join the Democrats, adding that she would make a good presidential candidate.

Meanwhile, Omid Scobie, co-author of the flattering Finding Freedom biography on the Sussexes, previously said, “Meghan is the embodiment of the American dream.

One day we may see Meghan become president.”

However, she has never publicly confirmed any personal ambitions to enter politics or run for office.

Before that, the former Suits actress sparked controversy in October 2022 when she claimed that her time on the game show, Deal or No Deal, which ran from 2006 to 2007, made her feel like a bimbo.

During an episode of the Archetypes podcast, Markle said, “When I look back at that time, I’ll never forget this one detail.

There was a woman who ran the show, and she’d be there backstage, and I can still hear her go, Markle, suck it in.”

Meghan explained how the women were told to wear hair extensions and fake eyelashes, as well as were given spray tans and bra padding.

She said, “There was a very cookie-cutter idea of precisely what we should look like,” Markle continued.
