Margot Robbie Describes Filming ‘Awkward’ Sex Scenes with Leonardo DiCaprio

It’s always a little weird filming a sex scene, especially when it’s your first.

Margot Robbie talked about filming her famed sex scenes in The Wolf of Wall Street with Leonardo DiCaprio in a recent interview.

Robbie and Leonardo DiCaprio had a fantastic relationship while filming the 2013 picture. Robbie was still a newcomer to the acting world, and this was her breakthrough role. She hadn’t recorded any nude sequences before she was cast in the role of Naomi Belfort. So it’s understandable that when the time came for Robbie to film a scene with DiCaprio, she was a little anxious.

The Australian actress wowed critics and fans not just with her performance as Leonardo’s hard-done-by wife, but also with her bravery in stripping off for the intimate sequences.

In the August edition of Vanity Fair, she said, “I hadn’t done a proper sex scene before. I’d done scenes where it’s leading into sex or sex had just finished, but I hadn’t done a start-to-finish sex scenes like I did in Wolf. That was my first.”

She admitted, “I was practically naked there. But it wasn’t anywhere as much as in Wolf.”

When asked about working with Leonardo, she said, “It was at an audition. I was more nervous about my audition so I didn’t have time to worry about, ‘Oh I’m about to meet Leo and Marty [Martin Scorsese]’. It was all so last minute that I didn’t have time to be nervous about the whole process. That was probably a good thing in hindsight.’

‘He’s an incredible actor, everyone knows that, but he’s also a really awesome down to earth person so it was a really lovely experience. I was very fortunate”’.

Robbie was just 22 years old at the time. She had only been acting professionally since her late teenage years, having graduated from college in Queensland, Australia. Robbie landed roles in Neighbours and Pan Am before landing an A-List role in “The Wolf of Wall Street” after an audition.

She acknowledged keeping her mind off the enormous audience who will ultimately see her naked form on movie screens across the world in an interview with Radio Times.

One of the oddest aspects of the experience, she said, was having “tons of people” watching them film the various sequences. “It’s so awkward.”

‘You sit there and feel, “Ooh, this is so scary”, but you are not thinking of the millions of people who might see you naked, you are thinking about the crew,’  she explained.

‘You have just talked to a bloke about his daughter’s violin recital and now he’s going to see you naked. The bigger deal you make of it, though, the more intimidating it becomes so you just get on with it.’

When it came to overcoming her nerves, she replied, “There isn’t an option. It’s just like, this is what you need to do – get on with it. The sooner you do it, the sooner you can stop doing it.”

On the plus side, the suicide squad actress was blown away by the costumes worn in the film.

“They were very fun. It’s not my style or anything I ever intend on wearing but for the sake of the character and creating her they really helped. We had a brilliant costume designer who was very specific about using the original brands. She looked at the pictures of Nadine (the real-life Naomi) back in the day and sourced those brands from the specific year the scenes were filmed in. That’s how accurate it was. It was really awesome trying them all on and we used to do hours of fittings. It was so cool seeing vintage Chanel, Versace, Armani…”

Robbie went on to say that the staff was “really great about it” and acted “professionally,” making her feel more at ease. “It’s not new to anyone on a film set, so for me it was intimidating but for everyone else it was just another day at the office.”

Margot has landed yet another high-profile part in Martin Scorsese’s renowned modern classic, which chronicles the story of rich stockbroker Jordan Belfort in the late 1980s.

She is presently starring with Will Smith in Focus, another film in which she is required to strip down.

Despite feeling a little uneasy, she gave an outstanding performance. With parts in Suicide Squad and The Legend of Tarzan this summer, the actress is fast becoming one of Hollywood’s most sought-after leading women.

The thing she hated the most about the movie filming was the nails.

“I had to wear really long acrylic nails for the entire six month shoot. It was a key element to my character. They were integral to her. It was incredibly inconvenient for my personal life. I don’t know how other women manage. The most mundane tasks were suddenly monumental tasks – unbuttoning buttons, texting, tying shoe laces, getting lids off things… I couldn’t believe how much it affected my life, it was so difficult. I had a ritual every Sunday where Gina the manicurist would come to my house with Anna who did the cast’s spray tans. My friends and I would watch the football in the day and then have a super girly second half of the evening when we’d have nails and spray tans. Then I’d walk around my house like a mannequin with wet nails and tan and feel disgusting. It was ridiculous. It was a relief to get them off”.
