Keira Knightley hated becoming an ‘object of lust’ after Pirates of the Caribbean
Keira Knightley has revealed that her s** symbol status after starring in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise left her feeling “caged in”.
Knightley, who played Elizabeth Swann in the films, admitted that she felt “stuck” after playing the object of male desire in the movies.
“I felt very constrained. I felt very stuck,” she said during a chat with Harper’s Bazaar.
“So the roles afterwards were about trying to break out of that…I didn’t have a sense of how to articulate it. It very much felt like I was caged in a thing I didn’t understand.”
The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise made Knightley an international star when she was just 18.

The success of the first film in the franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, was a big shock for the actor.
“There’s a funny place where women are meant to sit, publicly, and I never felt comfortable with that. It was a big jolt,” she said.
In the Pirates of the Caribbean films, Knightley played the kidnapped love interest of blacksmith Will Turner, while also coming across pirate captains Jack Sparrow and Hector Barbossa.
The film grossed over $654.3 million worldwide and became the fourth highest-grossing film of 2003.
Knightley subsequently appeared in two more Pirates of the Caribbean films before departing the franchise, aside from a cameo appearance in 2017’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
Despite the massive success of the Pirates series, Knightley was able to make an impression in other offbeat roles that brought her critical acclaim.
Her breakthrough role came in the sports comedy Bend It Like Beckham, in which she played a tomboy soccer player named Juliette “Jules” Paxton who convinces her friend to pursue the sport.
She also earned a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her role in Pride and Prejudice, while other performances in Atonement and The Imitation Game also garnered significant praise.
Knightley’s success in Pirates of the Caribbean led to a lot of focus on her physical appearance, which is something that Knightley has been vocal about in the past.
“I think women’s bodies are a battleground and photography is partly to blame,” she told Time Out in 2018.
“Our society is so photographic now, it becomes more difficult to see all of those different varieties of shape.”
Knightley’s experience has highlighted the challenges that come with being a s** symbol in Hollywood.
Other actors, such as Megan Fox and Angelina Jolie, have also spoken out about how their status as a s** symbol affected their careers.
However, it’s encouraging to see that actors like Knightley have been able to break out of that mould and find success in a range of roles.
