Emilia Clarke says Jason Momoa Was “So Kind” to her during s-x scenes

Suppose you’re a 23-year-old actress who has just arrived on set for her first significant role. Your character’s first scene. Stripping down, getting into a bathtub, and preparing to marry a gruff, enormous stranger. Emilia Clarke found herself in this scenario after being cast as Danaerys Targaryen on Game of Thrones in 2010. Clarke could have had an unconformable experience doing those s** scenes with full-frontal nud!ty as a novice (she only had a few modest TV appearances and a theater school degree at the time), but that wasn’t the case.

Emilia Clarke spoke up about filming n-ked scenes on the famous HBO program Game of Thrones on a recent episode of Dax Shepard’s podcast Armchair Expert.

According to the 33-year-old, “Season 1 was what it was — it was a f–k ton of nud!ty… and obviously I took the job. And then they sent me the pilot, they sent me the scripts, and I was reading them and it was like, ‘Oh, there’s the catch! Ooh okay, alright then.'”

“But, I’d come fresh from drama school and was like, ‘Approach this as a job. If it’s in the script, it’s clearly needed.'” She told herself, “‘I’m going to make sense of it… Everything’s going to be cool’… So I kind of came to terms with that beforehand.”

“I’d been on a film set twice before then and now I’m on a film set completely n-ked with all these people.”

Her first s** scene with Khal Drogo, played by Jason Momoa, is more akin to a rape; future episodes include less uncomfortable, but still brutal, s** scenes with him.

While working on the more disturbing scenes, “he was crying more than I was!” Clarke said of Momoa. “He took care of me in an environment, I didn’t know I need to be taken care of … He was so kind and considerate and cared about me as a human being.”

He also used his past knowledge in the industry to help her understand what is and isn’t typical, she said. She explained, “Jason was an experienced actor who had done a bunch of stuff before coming onto Game of Thrones. He said, ‘This is how it’s meant to be and how it’s not meant to be. I’m going to make sure that’s not the case.’ So he was always like, ‘Can we get her a robe? She’s shivering!’”

After years on the program, the Last Christmas star says she’s finally found what she’s comfortable doing: “When I did the last nud!ty that I did for the show, I was like, ‘I am owning this. This is mine. They’ve asked me to do it, and I’m fucking game.'”

She also has no qualms about speaking up when she feels uncomfortable: “I’ve had fights on set before where I’m like, ‘No, the sheet stays up,’ and they’re like, ‘No, you don’t wanna disappoint your Game of Thrones fans.’ And I’m like, ‘Fuck you.'”

As she stated, she was really fortunate to have someone like Jason on her side and to be able to speak up for herself during those trying times.

The public debate around s-xual assault has altered since the show’s 2011 launch, owing in part to the #MeToo movement. As a result, the program and some of the performers’ remarks have aged poorly.

Momoa’s position in the HBO series didn’t go past season 1 (apart from a few cameos in season 2), but “Aquaman” has established him as a real movie star.
