Demi Lovato Hits 2017 AMAs Red Carpet With Trans Lawmaker Danica Roem as Her Date
Demi Lovato is a rebel, so it’s no surprise that she walked the red carpet at the 2017 American Music Awards at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles alongside Danica Roem, a transgender politician who was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates earlier this month.
After being “completely inspired” by her historic victory over longtime Republican incumbent Bob Marshall, the singer personally invited the Virginia Del.-elect to be her date.
The pop artist, who is a vocal supporter of LGBTQ rights, told E! News that attending the AMAs with Roem was in keeping with the anti-bullying ethos of her single “Sorry Not Sorry,” which she will perform at the ceremony.
“We connected because I heard her story. She is actually the first out and seated transgender state legislator in American history, and when I heard that, I was just completely inspired by it,” she said. “I wanted to have her in the audience with me tonight because I feel like we have been through some of the same things and now we get to share this experience together.”
Roem, who is set to be inaugurated on Jan. 10, stated that while she prefers heavy metal, she loves Lovato’s fight for inclusivity in an interview on the red carpet.

“I’m also really grateful Demi has spent her career advocating for people who need a voice when they feel voiceless,” Roem told E! News. “She really understands what you look like, where you come from, who you worship or who you love you really should be welcomed and celebrated for who you are, not in spite of.”

GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis complimented Lovato and Roem in an email statement to HuffPost, calling them “two strong and inspirational women who embody the need for all Americans to stand together united and to take action today against any form of discrimination and oppression.”
Ellis went on to say, “Danica Roem is a trailblazer whose win in Virginia showcased both how young people and marginalized communities can impact voting results and how every American deserves an opportunity to work hard and achieve their dreams. Demi Lovato continues her legacy of raising the bar for entertaining audiences around the world and for spotlighting social issues that need the most attention.”
As for the big show, Tracee Ellis Ross will emcee the annual extravaganza honoring the year’s greatest musical talents.
With 28 awards to be given out (29 if you count the one and only Diana Ross’ Lifetime Achievement award), 16 performances from stars like Selena Gomez, Christina Aguilera, and Lady Gaga, and more than 30 A-listers scheduled to perform at some point during the evening, viewers at home can expect a jam-packed evening.
The American Music Awards will air live on ABC on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
