Demi Lovato, the singer who got her start on Disney Channel, has revealed a traumatic experience from her past that she kept hidden for many years.

In her upcoming docuseries Dancing with the Devil, scheduled to release on March 23, 2021, Lovato speaks about losing her virginity in a rape.

Though she didn’t name the co-star who assaulted her, it is suspected that it happened during her time on one of the shows she acted in as a teenager.

Lovato began her career as a child actor on Barney & Friends and moved to Los Angeles as a teenager after her then-friend Selena Gomez started appearing in Wizards of Waverly Place.

Lovato starred in As the Bell Rings before getting her big break in the Disney Channel movie Camp Rock, which showcased her impressive vocals.

She went on to release multiple albums under Disney’s Hollywood Records and also appeared in the sequel Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam.

Her final project with Disney was her own series, Sonny with a Chance.

During her time at Disney, Lovato was part of a group of young stars who were expected to uphold certain standards, such as wearing purity rings and publicly declaring that they would wait until marriage to have s**.

Lovato explains that the pressure to conform was particularly difficult for women, especially for 15-year-old girl stars like herself.

It was around this age that the assault took place.

Lovato spoke about a person she was “hooking up with” who raped her despite her protests.

She blamed herself at the time but now recognizes that she was not at fault.

Lovato hopes that by sharing her story, she can help other survivors speak out and get help.

Disney was known for encouraging its young stars to date each other, and Lovato dated Joe Jonas, the older brother of Nick Jonas, during her time at the network.

The pair starred together in Camp Rock and remained friends after their split.

Lovato has not commented on whether Jonas was the co-star who assaulted her.

Lovato’s experience is unfortunately not uncommon, and she wants other survivors to know that they are not alone.

She encourages those who have experienced s**ual assault to speak out and seek help.

In the United States, the RAINN National s**ual Assault Telephone Hotline can provide support and connect survivors with local service providers.

Despite the trauma she faced during her time at Disney, Lovato looks back fondly on her early career.

She recently celebrated the nine-year anniversary of Camp Rock, thanking Disney for the beginning of an incredible journey.

Lovato has come a long way since her days as a child star, and her bravery in speaking out about her assault shows that she is not just a talented artist but also a role model for survivors everywhere.
