Why Donald Trump is Leaving Mar-a-Lago for New Jersey
Since ex-President Donald Trump moved to Mar-a-Lago after losing the general election in November 2020, much has been made of his decision to make the Palm Beach private resort and golf club his permanent residence.
Donald Trump wasted no time before getting on to the next chapter of his life on Inauguration Day 2021. The outgoing president and his family went to Palm Beach instead of attending Joe Biden’s inauguration. They set up shop at Trump’s opulent beach club, Mar-a-Lago, where Trump and his wife Melania founded their new headquarters.
Members of the neighboring community reacted angrily to the prospect that Trump would make the opulent locale his new residence, especially decades after the one-time real estate developer signed a deal purporting to guarantee he wouldn’t do precisely what he ended up doing anyway.
Now it seems that the Trumps will not be permanently residing in their Florida paradise — at least not all year. According to Business Insider, the former president intends to move to his Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, for a few months beginning in late spring. It’s one of Trump’s many clubs, which he owns on both coasts.
As confirmed by the South Florida Sun Sentinel and Insider on April 23, Trump seems to be making plans to leave Mar-a-Lago, which has proceeded to host a series of Republican donor activities in the run-up to the 2022 midterm elections.

Mar-a-Lago isn’t the best place to spend the summer
Donald Trump’s affection for Mar-a-Lago hasn’t waned in the least. The Florida atmosphere, on the other hand, is not his cup of tea. As Business Insider points out, the months of June through September are oppressively hot and humid, not to mention hurricane season in Florida. Snowbirds that visit for the winter normally return north in the spring. As a result, Mar-a-Lago closes after Memorial Day and does not reopen until the fall. There’s no need for Trump to stay while his buddies and supporters aren’t around.
Donald Trump’s decision to transfer his post-presidential headquarters from Mar-a-Lago to the Trump-owned golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, has been in the works for a while, according to an adviser who talked to Insider on the condition of anonymity in April. The explanation for the change, according to the media source, is because of Florida’s summer climate, which “becomes a decidedly hot, muggy, and flat-out swampy affair.”
According to Business Insider, the former president will conduct his fundraising activities in Bedminster until he relocates. He’s recently hinted that he’s considering a presidential bid in 2024 “very seriously, beyond seriously”.
Trump isn’t leaving Mar-a-Lago for good but because he’ll be relocating to Bedminster. Trump is expected to move to Florida after the season, according to Insider and the Sun Sentinel, and given that he has no intention to apply for permanent residency in New Jersey, this seems to be the most possible scenario.
The Trump campaign is “moving the whole operation to New Jersey because they’re going to start doing more fundraising.” according to the aforementioned article. It’s unclear if his daughter Ivanka or son Don Jr. will accompany him.
‘The swamp won’: Lincoln Project stings Trump with new attack ad
The Lincoln Project is keeping up the pressure on Donald Trump as he leaves office, with a recent ad urging him to run for president in 2024.
The latest commercial, dubbed “Swamp Thing,” lasts just over a minute and shows one of Trump’s biggest campaign promises.
The commercial opens, “We are going to drain the swamp,” with a quotation from Trump that has been echoed several times during his 2016 campaign.
However, the video then shifts to insulting Trump, claiming that the GOP has regained dominance of Washington, D.C. due to certain insufficiently loyal members.
“The swamp won, Donald. Mitch McConnell’s Washington consultants are making big money using your name. We don’t know if Mitch gets a cut, but what do you think, Donald? ” The narrator of the commercial says.
“You’re getting played. He’s picking candidates loyal to him,” The narrator continues, referring to McConnell’s promise to weigh in on GOP Senate primaries, even though it means supporting a non-Trump-backed nominee.
