Leslie Caron, the French actress best known for her role in “Gigi,” has spoken out about her relationship with actor Warren Beatty in the 1960s.

In an interview with The Irish Times, Caron, who is 91, revealed that Beatty always had girlfriends who resembled his sister Shirley MacLaine.

“I had many of her qualities,” Caron said. “I was a dancer, I had a very good figure, I was independent. Until he was a fully grown man, his sister was the center point of his life.”

Caron also spoke about Beatty’s controlling and possessive behavior. She recalled an instance in which Beatty woke her up in the middle of the night because he was worried that she wasn’t thinking about him.

“I thought it was funny! It’s romantic when you’re young and somebody is thinking obsessively about you in the middle of the night. You are quite flattered,” Caron said.

However, she later realized that this behavior was a sign of his narcissism and a desire to control her.

“He considered himself my tutor and told me how to dress and wear makeup and how to behave,” she added.

Despite Beatty’s persistent proposals, Caron refused to marry him. “He kept asking me and I kept saying, ‘No, Warren, no,'” she said.

“Everything with him was too dramatic. I didn’t think I could keep up the pace. And I couldn’t, and eventually I left him because of that. He wanted everything to be so well announced. He loved to be trailed around by journalists and to have everything you did photographed. I just couldn’t accept that kind of life.”

At the time, Caron was already married to Peter Hall, the director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, with whom she had two children. The couple were living apart in order to pursue their respective careers.

Beatty, who was born in Virginia, followed in the footsteps of his elder sister MacLaine, who won an Oscar for best actress in 1984 for her role in “Terms of Endearment.”

He quickly rose to fame and developed a playboy reputation. In an interview with The Rake, Beatty once said, “Women are like a jar of olives. You can eat one, close it up, or you can eat them all.”

In addition to his brief affair with Sonny Cher, Beatty also dated a number of other younger women, including Mamie Van Doren and Natalie Wood, who co-starred with him in “Splendor in the Grass.”

He then began a relationship with Julie Christie in the 1960s, which lasted until 1973.

In the years that followed, Beatty dated a number of other high-profile actresses, including Brigitte Bardot and Britt Ekland.

He eventually married actress Annette Bening in 1992, after co-starring with her in “Bugsy.” The couple appeared together again in the 1994 comedy “Love Affair.”

However, Beatty’s reputation has been tarnished in recent years by allegations of s**ual misconduct.

In 2021, he was accused of forcing a 14-year-old girl, Kristina Hirsch, to sleep with him on a movie set in 1973.

Hirsch, who is now 63, claimed that Beatty groomed her for months before the incident occurred. Beatty has not commented on the allegations.

Beatty has had a successful career in Hollywood. He has been nominated for 14 Academy Awards, winning one for best director for his work on “Reds” in 1981.

He has also received a number of other accolades, including the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement.
