Sophie Wessex, the Countess of Wessex, and her husband Prince Edward were almost bestowed with the title of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, a title that ultimately went to Kate Middleton.

The couple, who share two children – Lady Louise Windsor and James Viscount VII, tied the knot in June 1999 at St George’s Chapel in Windsor.

At the time, Queen Elizabeth had intended to grant her youngest son the dukedom.

However, a special request from Prince Edward led to a different honor.

Prince Edward expressed his desire to be named Earl of Wessex after being inspired by the character of the same name in the film adaptation of Shakespeare’s play, “Shakespeare in Love.”

A courtier revealed in 2010 that Prince Edward was initially set to become the Duke of Cambridge.

However, his fondness for the character of the Earl of Wessex led him to ask the Queen if he could have that title instead.

As history unfolded, Kate Middleton, now known as the Princess of Wales, became the Duchess of Cambridge when she married Prince William in April 2011.

Following the recent passing of Prince Philip in April 2021 and Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022, Prince Edward and Sophie Wessex are reportedly preparing for new private titles.

There were speculations that King Charles III planned to bestow his late father’s Duke of Edinburgh honor upon his granddaughter, Princess Charlotte, making her the Duchess of Edinburgh.

However, it is now believed that the iconic title will be given to Prince Edward instead.

Reports suggest that King Charles changed his mind about his initial decision after Edward perceived his plans as a slight.

According to a source close to the royal family, the title had been promised to Edward by the late Queen, and he and Sophie always believed it would eventually pass to their son, Viscount VII.

It appears that the tide is now turning, and the King has had time to reflect on the late Queen’s wishes.

The final decision regarding the titles is yet to be officially announced.
