King Charles is set to celebrate his first official birthday as sovereign with the Trooping the Colour celebration on June 17, 2023.

Although the King will turn 75 on November 14, this longstanding royal tradition is designed to pay tribute to the monarch when the weather is more likely to be kind to the crowds of spectators and participants.

The event is an annual spectacle where regiments of the Household Division troop their colour on Horse Guards Parade, followed by an RAF fly-past and the iconic balcony appearance of the royal family.

However, one of the most dramatic events in the ceremony’s history occurred in 1981 when a would-be assassin targeted Queen Elizabeth II.

The then-32-year-old Prince Charles was present at the ceremony and could have taken over as King much sooner than expected.

A teenager named Marcus Sarjeant fired six blank shots at the Queen from the crowd but was quickly apprehended by police.

Prior to the incident, he had warned her with the words, “don’t go.”

Thankfully, the Queen was unharmed, and Sarjeant was sentenced to five years in prison for treason.
