Jessica Simpson says she ‘Went Back’ to John Mayer ‘close to 9 times’
Jessica Simpson claims she and John Mayer had a terrific sexual relationship.
Simpson tells Hoda Kotb in an interview that will appear on Tuesday’s Today show that she and Mayer, who met in 2005 and dated on and off for years, had a contentious relationship.
“We were great at intimacy. We were great at loving each other,” the singer said. “That was easy, but the relationship was very complex.” She stated that their relationship was “on-again, off-again,” and that she returned to him “nearly 9 times.”
Simpson, 39, told PEOPLE in an exclusive interview that her relationship with Mayer had “control” over her.
She stated of Mayer, “He loved me in the way that he could, and I loved that love for a very long time. Too long. And I went back and forth with it for a long time. But it did control me.”

“He’d walk into a room and pick up his guitar and you’d swoon,” she continued. “I didn’t really know the man behind the guitar. And that was my mission.”
After Mayer referred to Simpson as “sexual napalm” during an interview with Playboy in 2010, their relationship came to an end. The “Gravity” singer has since apologized publicly, but Simpson isn’t hesitant about discussing how she felt during the ordeal.
“He thought that was what I wanted to be called. I was floored and embarrassed that my grandmother was actually gonna read that,” Simpson told the outlet. “A woman and how they are in bed is not something that is ever talked about. It was shocking.”
“I erased his number. He made it easy for me to walk away,” she added.
Simpson went on to say that she has grown since then.
“I know that he’s publicly apologized and I don’t want to take that away from him,” she explained. “I think he knows a lot of this about me already but he doesn’t know the perspective I have as a woman. That was Jess in her 20s.”
Jessica, 39, has also made additional appearances on the talk show circuit to talk about her new memoir, Open Book, and has previously spoken up to the Today presenter about being sexually molested as a 6-year-old in a previously published segment of the interview. She also objected to John’s “sexual napalm” remark in the book, which he made in a 2010 Playboy interview. In a new memoir acquired by RadarOnline.com, she said, “The February interview in Playboy sealed it. He talked about me by name in the most degrading terms. You can look it up because I had to be asked about those quotes in every interview I did for about two or three years.”
The singer revealed that being desired by John at initially felt good since it was the “polar opposite” of how she felt in her marriage with Nick Lachey. In November 2005, the singer filed for divorce from the 46-year-old 98 Degrees star, but she also stated that they had sex one more time before calling it quits.
“He rang the bell, and out of reflex I hugged him,” she claimed of their final encounter before they parted ways. “I meant it, too. Despite my anger, I missed him … I didn’t know any other way to make it better, so I slept with him.” She added that there was “no connection,” even though the experience was “emotional.”
