Jennifer Lopez Celebrates 24th Anniversary of ‘Selena’ Movie
Jennifer Lopez is looking back with admiration and love. Selena, the famed entertainer’s breakout film, has been out for 24 years now, and she honored the occasion on Sunday.
Lopez took to Instagram to provide a personal remark on the film that launched her career and catapulted her to A-list stardom in Hollywood.
Lopez shared clips from the movie, in which she sang “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom,” “I Could Fall In Love,” and a disco medley Selena did in the Houston Astrodome in 1995 in three clips from Selena. Lopez captioned a clip from the movie’s Astrodome sequence, “I can’t believe it’s been 24 years since the release of Selena. I’m so proud of this movie!!! So proud to be a small part of Selena’s amazing legacy.”
“I studied her tirelessly, her every step, her finger movements, her lips … her infectious laugh…her expressions,” Lopez said of her preparation for the role of the renowned singer.
Trending:
“Once it was time to be her in the movie and we were filming the big Houston Astrodome scene I did the first take and after it Edward James Olmos who played Selenas father, an amazing and powerful actor came to me and said, ‘you’ve done your homework, now just let it go…just let everything go…'” Lopez went on. “So I did and just did my thing… the rest is what you see in the movie!!”

According to the Los Angeles Times, Selena was posthumously recognized with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award last week, while some fans were disappointed by the lack of a Selena memorial during the ceremony. Selena’s father, Abraham Quintanilla, spoke to People ahead of the awards presentation about her legacy. “Selena’s life was cut short, but her fans have carried her throughout the years and her legacy is being passed on from generation to generation,” Quintanilla said. “That in itself is incredible.”
Jennifer’s message received a lot of praise from her fans. Within a few hours, the post had received roughly 24 million views. Several people applauded Jennifer’s performance in the film, while others declared Selena to be one of the finest films they had ever seen. Jennifer Lopez’s performance was lauded by a number of celebrities, including Stevie Mackey, John Russo, and Jessy Terrero.

Selena, Lopez’s first significant leading part following a series of minor supporting roles, was released two years before her debut album, On the 6, in theaters on March 21, 1997. She was even nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress (Female) for her performance.
Selena, dubbed the “Queen of Tejano,” died on March 31, 1995. In the 1990s, she rose to prominence as one of the first significant female artists in the male-dominated genre, which she helped popularize on the Latin charts and on the GRAMMY stage. She was recognized for singles like “Como La Flor,” “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom,” and “No Me Queda Más” as well as posthumous crossover English hits like “Dreaming of You” and “I Could Fall in Love” which she co-wrote with her brother A.B. Quintanilla.
