The Royal Family has been embroiled in yet another controversy as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been asked to vacate their English home, Frogmore Cottage, by Prince Charles.

The couple has until the end of summer to leave the property, which was their only secure base in the country after they lost their armed police protection in 2020.

Frogmore Cottage is situated within the Metropolitan Police’s ring of steel, which surrounds the Windsor estate, and provides a level of security that is considered essential for members of the Royal Family.

The property was refurbished at a cost of £2.4 million in 2019, before the couple moved in.

However, public outrage was quickly quelled after the Duke and Duchess repaid the amount in full, along with an additional sum covering the rent for several years.

The decision to ask the Sussexes to vacate Frogmore Cottage has caused shock and dismay among the couple and some members of the Royal Family.

The property has been given to Prince Andrew, who was stripped of his royal titles and privileges amid allegations of underage s** abuse by Jeffrey Epstein survivor Virginia Dufour, which he denies.

Prince Andrew was offered the keys to the property by Prince Charles after being told to downsize from his royal residence by August.

The timing of the announcement has led many to believe that it is a reaction to Prince Harry’s recent memoir, which is said to have angered Prince Charles.

The move has left the couple feeling like they are being punished and removed from the family for good.

With Prince Harry’s high court challenge against the workspace over a decision not to allow him to pay for police protection still ongoing, the loss of Frogmore Cottage means that the Sussexes will soon be without a base in the country that provides the level of security that senior members of the Royal Family require.

No alternative accommodation has been offered to the couple, and the loss of Frogmore Cottage means that their children, Archie and Lilibet, may not be able to visit them in the UK.

Despite this, Prince Charles is standing firm on his eviction notice, stating that his priorities lie elsewhere.

Prince Andrew has not yet responded to the offer of Frogmore Cottage, but with Prince Charles’ annual £249,000 allowance ending in April, it has become clear that he can no longer afford to live in his royal residence without the additional funding from the Duchy of Lancaster asset.

The Duke of York pays just £250 a week rent for the £30 million property, but the upkeep and running costs of the 30-room, 98-acre estate come to almost £400,000 per year.

Since moving in years ago, he has had to spend over £7.5 million on essential repairs and maintenance.

The decision to evict the Sussexes from Frogmore Cottage is a clear indication of the strained relations between Prince Harry and his family.

It remains to be seen where the couple will find a new base in the UK that provides the level of security they require.
