Charlie Sheen Explains Selma Blair’s Exit From ‘Anger Management’
Charlie Sheen is finally speaking up about Selma Blair’s departure from his FX series Anger Management, weeks after rumors surfaced that he had her dismissed.
“One of our primary characters, Selma Blair, who played Kate, was written out because [the show] was not about our relationship, and the problem was too many people were still excited about the ‘Two and a Half Men’ character and thought the ‘Anger Management’ character was a little dull,” Sheen, 48, told Jay Leno on Wednesday.
The former Two and a Half Men actor was rumored to have had a falling out with Selma. According to Deadline, Sheen, 48, fired Blair, 41, in an expletive-filled text message after Blair allegedly took issue with the former Two and a Half Men star’s on-set conduct.
Selma was apparently displeased with his work ethic.
“We are confirming that Selma Blair will not be returning to Anger Management and we wish her the very best,” Lionsgate, which produces the FX sitcom, stated in a statement in June.
Sheen joked that he’s started calling the show Anger Management 2.0 — “the reboot.”
“One of our primary characters, Selma Blair, who played Kate, was written out because [the show] was not about our relationship, and the problem was too many people were still excited about the Two and a Half [Men] character and thought the Anger Management character was a little dull,” Sheen explained. Sheen was fired from CBS’ Two and a Half Men two years ago after criticizing showrunner Chuck Lorre.
“So, um, that is not the case anymore,” he went on, referring to the idea that his therapist role was too dull. “Her character leaves, and I start circling the drain. So it’s really fun to watch and hella fun to play.”
“Where do you draw from [for] that?” Leno made a remark. “Where do you draw from the experience for that?”
“It’s a mystery,” Sheen jokingly said. “It just falls out of the sky. It’s crazy, it’s amazing.”
And he was alluding to his Anger Management therapist persona, who has been criticized for being a little boring.
Although that wasn’t Charlie’s only huge moment on the talk program.
He also had his own graduation ceremony replete with gowns.
In August, Lionsgate announced that Laura Bell Bundy will join the cast as Dr. Jordan Denby, Sheen’s character, an anger management therapist’s “new sex-study research partner.” She’s “a brilliant psychologist whose recent divorce, fondness for alcohol and wild mood swings turn Charlie’s life into an emotional roller coaster.”
The Tonight Show airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. on NBC. Anger Management airs on FX on Thursdays at 9:30 p.m.
