After more than six decades in Hollywood, Streisand claims she has never experienced sexual harassment.

On Friday, the diva was celebrated for her incredible career at PaleyFest, where she sat down for an intimate talk with Ryan Murphy at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, where she said that while she sympathizes with many women involved in the #MeToo movement, she is unable to empathize.

Murphy (Glee, American Horror Story) acknowledged to being anxious as he began his one-on-one interview with the star of Funny Girl and award-winning television specials dating back to 1966’s Color Me Barbra.

“People talk about Barbra as the greatest female star. I say, no, that’s not enough,” Murphy said, describing her as a trailblazer for individuals who don’t fit the stereotype. “She was a touchstone, a beacon I followed my entire life.

Murphy grilled her on her career, the Me Too movement, and her dislike of interviews.

When asked if she had ever been sexually mistreated, she said, “Never. I wasn’t like those pretty girls with those nice little noses. Maybe that’s why.”

“I had no idea,” she said, describing a meal she had with a “very beautiful woman last night” who said she, too, had never been harassed. “It depends on circumstances,” Streisand explained.

She also discussed the present state of Hollywood.

“We’re in a strange time now, in terms of men and women, and the pendulum swinging this way and that way, and it’s going to have to come to the center.”

Streisand stated that she will continue to fight for gender equality and stand with individuals who have been sexually victimized.

Murphy subsequently stated that Streisand had been one of the most well-known and powerful female performers for decades, with few women matching her star power. “I never thought of myself as powerful,” Streisand asserted.

“I was always thinking, ‘Wow,’ like a person surprised I was powerful,” she shared. “What does powerful mean? I don’t know what powerful meant.”

According to Variety, in addition to discussing her long career in Hollywood, the extremely quiet celebrity revealed one of the reasons for her years of avoiding the public.

Her aversion to speaking with the media stems from years of “inaccurate reporting,” including one piece that said she has a “awards room” at home dedicated to her Oscars, Emmys, and other trophies. The late TV journalist Mike Wallace, though, received the worst criticism.

Stresiand said that she gave an interview with Mike Wallace years ago (before he was on 60 Minutes) and that she thought he was “mean” to her afterward. She adds that after receiving outrage over the interview, Wallace went on the radio the following week to tell that Streisand had told him how much she “loved” the sit down.

“I thought, I don’t know what date rape is, it’s terrible, but it was such a violation… Why lie?” she commented.

In a 1990s interview with Barbara Walters, Streisand expressed dissatisfaction with the way video of her supporting Al Gore’s presidential campaign was edited. Walters grew enraged when the “Woman in Love” singer appeared on C-Span to clarify her remarks.

“She got really angry with me because I told C-Span what I wanted to say,” said Streisand. “She thought I betrayed her because I went on C-Span, but I wish her well. She’s a good woman.”

The 75-year-old legend also revealed that she demands control in her work, but only in the service of her art, which has included directing, acting, and producing television movies, including 1995’s Serving in Silence: The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story, which dealt with anti-gay discrimination in the military.

She confessed that she despised being labeled “controlling” adding, “which I am, I would say anybody talented like you, wants to control their work.” Streisand went on to remark that when she was directing, she felt the most powerful.

“To be in control and not feel frustrated… it’s just so wonderful,” she added. “You feel so humbled by that power.”
