The unauthorized release of a video showing Jesse Williams n^ked during a shower scene in a Broadway play has sparked outrage from both producers and the union representing actors and stage managers.

The video was widely circulated online, despite the fact that the theatre had prohibited recording and distribution of footage from the play.

Kate Shindle, president of Actors’ Equity Association, said that the organisation “condemn[s] in the strongest possible terms the creation and distribution of photographs and videos of our members during a n^de scene”.

She also pointed out that the person responsible for filming the footage must have known that they were acting in violation of both the theatre’s rules and the actors’ right to privacy.

Williams is currently starring in a revival of Richard Greenberg’s “Take Me Out”, which explores the consequences when a Major League Baseball player comes out as gay, and the impact this has on his team.

The play has been using Yondr pouches to protect the actors, with audience members handing over their phones to be put in the locked pouches before the start of the show.

Second Stage Theater, which is producing the play, said that it would increase security measures following the violation.

In a statement, the theatre company said: “Taking n^ked pictures of anyone without their consent is highly objectionable and can have severe legal consequences.

Posting it on the internet is a gross and unacceptable violation of trust between the actor and audience forged in the theatre community.

We are actively pursuing takedown requests and ask that no one participates in the distribution of these images”.

Williams, who was nominated for a Tony Award on Monday for his role in the play, has not yet commented on the incident.

The incident has once again highlighted the issue of privacy violations in the era of social media.

Recently, a number of high-profile celebrities have spoken out against the actions of paparazzi and others who have taken photos or videos of them without their consent and then shared them online.

In some cases, these images have been used to harass or threaten the individuals concerned.
