Tom Cruise’s bizarre on-set rules revealed by his co-star

Tom Cruise had an unusual rule for his films, according to a former co-star, which reportedly forbade his fellow actors from running with him on-screen.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Annabelle Wallis, who co-starred with Cruise in 2017’s The Mummy, said as much.

“I got to run on-screen with him, but he told me no at first. He said, ‘Nobody runs on-screen [with me],’ and I said, ‘But I’m a really good runner,'” Wallis said. “So, I would time my treadmill so that he’d walk in and see me run. And then he added all these running scenes. So, that was it.”

“It was, like, better than an Oscar. I was so happy! I was so happy that I got to run on-screen with Tom Cruise,” she said.

Wallis earlier stated that she was “adamant” about running alongside Cruise, as he was “so particular about his running.”

She said: “I was so cheeky with him that I said ‘Come on, I’ll run through the studio with you and beat you’ and, oh my God, I did,” she said. “But then he has this turbo button and as he sees you creeping up he does not like it and he powers on through,” she said. He actually developed more running sequences for the two of them because he was pleased, she added.

Wallis isn’t the only former Cruise co-star who has recently spoken out about his strange habits: Thandie Newton, Cruise’s co-star in Mission: Impossible 2, finally acknowledged the rough times she had on set with her “very dominant” lead last month.

She revealed she felt ‘terrified and insecure’ on the set of the film in an interview with Vulture.

Cruise is also known for performing all of his own stunts, some of which result in injuries. In 2018, he injured his ankle while filming Mission: Impossible 6, leaping across rooftops.

“He was a very dominant individual. He tries super hard to be a nice person. But the pressure. He takes on a lot. And I think he has this sense that only he can do everything as best as it can be done,” Newton said.

“There was one time, we were doing this night scene, there were so many extras with pyrotechnics and you name it, and it was a scene with him and me on the balcony,” she said. “And I don’t think it was a very well-written scene. I get angry with him. We’re frustrated with each other. And we’re looking out over Spain. It wasn’t going well.”

He also recounted on The Graham Norton Show that on the set of The Mummy alongside Wallis, he “had to convince the studio” to allow them film an action sequence in zero gravity, a scene that took 64 takes to perfect.

“It took us two days and the crew was flying around and vomiting in between takes. You couldn’t train for this. Normally stunts take months of prepping but we just did it. It was wild and I can’t believe the studio actually let me do it,” he said.

Cruise’s former co-star in The Outsiders, Rob Lowe, revealed in a recent interview that Cruise was outraged when he realized they’d be sharing a hotel room while filming the 1983 picture.

He said: “(It was the) first time I ever stayed at The Plaza Hotel, and we check-in, and Tom finds out that we’re sharing a room and just goes ballistic.”
