In the summer of 2018, junior employees at Kensington Palace found themselves accustomed to receiving early morning emails and texts from the newly married Duchess of Sussex.
Initially, palace officials offered reassurance, explaining that Meghan’s work involved connecting with contacts in the US due to the time difference.
They also attributed any perceived differences in management style to cultural variations, suggesting that Americans tended to be more direct.
Meanwhile, friends of the former actress spoke highly of Meghan’s leadership skills, stating that she prided herself on being a good boss.
They shared an anecdote about her arranging for an ice cream stand to treat the staff.

However, as time went on, these explanations began to appear inadequate.
By October, the initial excitement surrounding Meghan and Prince Harry’s May wedding had faded, and insiders openly referred to Meghan as “Duchess Difficult.”
This label stemmed not from American straight-talking but rather from what some described as her sharp and adversarial demeanor.
Reports circulated of secretaries reduced to tears, and whispers of the word “bully” emerged, whether fairly or unfairly, in relation to the Duchess’s behavior.
Buckingham Palace had promised to release a report on how historic allegations of bullying were handled by officials.
Yet, today, those pledges seem hollow, as the report remains unpublished, and changes to palace protocols are left unexplained.
The suspicion is that transparency has been sacrificed to appease the central figures in this saga, Harry and Meghan.
Working for the Royals has never been for the faint-hearted.
It entails long hours, poor pay, and often strains domestic relationships.
What one person perceives as bullying, another may view as having a demanding boss.
The situation took a dramatic turn when Jason Knauf, the couple’s former communications secretary, lodged a formal complaint to protect his staff.
As the person responsible for managing the couple’s public image, Knauf’s concern prompted him to document his worries in an email.
He wrote, “I am very concerned that the Duchess was able to bully two PAs out of the household in the past year.
The treatment of X was totally unacceptable.
The Duchess seems intent on always having someone in her sights.
She is bullying Y and seeking to undermine her confidence.
We have had report after report from people who have witnessed unacceptable behavior towards Y.”
For two and a half years, these bullying allegations remained undisclosed.
It was only after Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal life and relocated to California that the claims became public knowledge.
The Times published them just days before the couple’s much-anticipated interview with Oprah Winfrey.
In response, the Duchess’s representatives accused Buckingham Palace of promoting a false narrative based on misleading and harmful information.
Signs of trouble first emerged in 2018 when it was revealed that Meghan’s personal assistant had left.
Shortly after, the assistant, Melissa Tuabti, who had previously worked for Robbie Williams and Amanda Stavely, was named.
However, she was not the first staff member to depart.
Another young woman, employed before Meghan and Harry’s marriage, had also abruptly resigned.
Both personal assistants signed non-disclosure agreements, a standard practice for royal staff, and there is no suggestion that the Duchess attempted to silence them.
Nevertheless, the relaxed and easygoing atmosphere that had characterized working for Prince Harry had drastically changed.
Behind the scenes, senior officials grew increasingly concerned.
The intervention of Samantha Cohen, a trusted aide to the Queen who later worked for Meghan and Harry, and Jason Knauf altered the course of events.
Now, in June 2022, the sound of derision surrounding the situation is growing louder.
Despite the allegations coming to light fifteen months ago and being privately raised four years ago, it is evident that they are still being swept under the rug.
The recent departure of Samantha Cohen, affectionately known as “Samantha the Panther” for her feisty attitude, adds weight to this observation.
Her exit follows closely after another aide resigned abruptly amid rumors of difficulties in working for the Duchess.
