Queen Elizabeth’s Cheeky Response When Prince Harry Asked for Permission to Marry Meghan Markle
Before the Duke and Duchess of Sussex got married in 2018, certain rules had to be followed.
Prince Harry had to inform his family and trusted advisors of his intentions to propose to Meghan Markle, and they referred him to his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.
He was told he needed her permission before proposing.
Upon hearing this, Prince Harry was quite surprised and annoyed.
In his memoir, Spare, he details how he felt when he discovered he had to be granted permission by his grandmother.

However, he had no choice but to seek her blessing, knowing that disapproval from the Queen would cause problems in his relationship with Meghan.
So, he waited for the perfect moment to inform the Queen.
He was nervous, but he knew he had to be careful with his words.
According to him, the best moment would be when the Queen was in a good mood.
Finally, he got to Her Majesty in a one-on-one conversation and informed her about how much he loved Meghan and his plans to marry her.
The Queen’s response was quite cheeky.
She first asked him, “You have to?”
This question was whether he really needed her permission.
After a short moment of silence, the Queen continued, “Well then, I suppose I have to agree.”
This answer confused Prince Harry, as revealed in his autobiography.
He didn’t understand if his grandmother was being sarcastic, ironic, or cryptic.
It took him quite a while to decipher that she was simply saying yes.
Upon discovering this, he said “fabulous” and thanked her.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex got married in May 2018, and it was a grand affair.
They exchanged their vows in front of the whole world, and it was a momentous occasion.
The wedding was attended by many dignitaries, including members of the royal family.
