Prince Harry Reveals His Role as the “Spare” in New Memoir

In his latest book, titled “Spare,” Prince Harry opens up about his childhood, shedding light on his relationship with his brother, Prince William, and his position within the royal family.

The Duke of Sussex shares that from a young age, he was aware of his destiny, as it had been made clear to him by his family.

While Prince William, who is two years older than Harry, was destined to be the heir, Harry found himself in the role of the “spare,” essentially serving as a backup plan.

He was always in the shadows, with his mission being twofold: to divert public attention from his brother and, if necessary, to provide support as a potential donor.

This included the possibility of donating a kidney, bone marrow, or even blood for transfusions if William ever needed it.

“I was brought into this world in case something happened to Willy,” writes Prince Harry.

He goes on to mention that even as a child, he understood the rule that his father, then the first in line to the throne, could not travel on the same plane as Prince William.

This precaution ensured that both main heirs would not be lost in a single tragic event.

However, little attention was given to who Prince Harry traveled with, which made him feel indifferent to his own fate.

The terms “heir” and “spare” were not only used by the press but also by members of the royal family to address William and Harry.

Prince Charles, their father, famously exclaimed upon the birth of his youngest son, “Great, now I have an heir and a spare, my job is done.”

Even Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana, Harry’s grandmother and mother respectively, used these labels, including in reference to him.
