Patrick Stewart has opened up about his relationship with fellow actor Ian McKellen, revealing that the pair have been inseparable for 20 years.

In interviews with both Playboy and Wired, Stewart spoke about his “love” for McKellen, saying that he and his wife are both “in love” with him. “We also have a hell of a lot of fun,” he said.

Stewart has had close friendships with gay men throughout his life, but none as significant as the one he shares with McKellen.

“I listen to him, I watch what he does – and I don’t mean just acting – how he lives his life is so admirable, selfless and compassionate,” Stewart said.

The two actors met while filming the 2000 movie X-Men, in which Stewart played Professor Charles Xavier and McKellen played Erik Lehnsherr.

They spent a lot of time together on set, bonding over tea and other beverages in their adjoining trailers.

“We found that we had so much in common,” Stewart said. “And by the way, he married us, my wife and me. He performed the ceremony.”

The pair were also both knighted, which Stewart joked was a bonding experience for them.

“That evening, I did call my wife, and I said to her, ‘Oh, hello. Is Lady Stewart home?’ because my wife has got a title also now,” he quipped.

Stewart’s admiration for McKellen goes beyond their friendship, however. “He’s one of the most accomplished actors in the world,” Stewart said.

“I watch him perform, and I’m always in awe. He’s got such control, such power. He’s absolutely brilliant.”

Stewart is well-known for his roles in sci-fi and fantasy films and TV shows, including Star Trek and X-Men.

But he said that his friendship with McKellen has given him a new appreciation for Shakespeare, which both actors have performed extensively throughout their careers.

“He’s taught me so much about Shakespeare,” Stewart said. “He has a real passion for it, and he’s helped me to understand it in a way that I never did before.”

The two actors have been open about their friendship for many years, often sharing photos and videos of each other on social media.

They have also appeared in a number of films and TV shows together, including the X-Men movies and the play Waiting for Godot.

Their friendship has become so iconic that it has even been given a name: the “McSir” friendship.

Both actors were knighted by Queen Elizabeth II – Stewart in 2010 and McKellen in 1991 – which gave them the honorific “Sir.”

Stewart’s comments about his friendship with McKellen have been widely praised on social media, with many fans expressing their admiration for the two actors.

“This friendship gives me so much hope,” one person wrote on Twitter. “I love seeing two older men loving and supporting each other like this.”

Stewart has been a vocal supporter of LGBTQ+ rights throughout his career, and has spoken openly about his support for same-sex marriage.

He has also appeared in a number of films and TV shows with LGBTQ+ themes, including the TV series Blunt Talk, in which he played a gay news anchor.

Overall, the friendship between Stewart and McKellen is a shining example of the power of connection and shared experiences.

As Stewart said, “I think our friendship is a result of us both having very similar interests and passions in life. And we just enjoy each other’s company.”
