Netflix Wins Most Emmys, tops HBO, Disney Plus and Apple TV+
During the 73rd Emmy Awards, streaming behemoth Netflix recaptured the top place among all TV platforms, thanks to numerous victories for “The Crown” and “The Queen’s Gambit.”
Netflix not only won the most Emmys this year, but it also won more than double the total number of awards as its closest competitor. In comparison, HBO and HBO Max received a total of 19 awards. Netflix also more than doubled its overall number of victories from the previous year, when it received 21 statuettes.
Netflix came into the Primetime Emmys with 34 wins from the Creative Arts Emmys. The streamer then picked up a further 10 awards, including wins for Gillian Anderson, Olivia Colman, and Josh O’Connor for their roles in “The Crown” and for Ewan McGregor for best actor in a limited series for his starring role in “Halston.” “The Crown” also won for best drama series as well as best directing and writing for a drama series. The drama about the British Royal Family won 11 Emmys in total, tying Netflix’s “The Queen’s Gambit” for the most wins for an individual program for the year. The chess drama starring Anya Taylor-Joy won the coveted best limited series award to close out the telecast.
Netflix matched CBS’s 1974 record for the most Emmys won by a single platform.
In another first, Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso was awarded Outstanding Comedy Series, marking the first time that the night’s three largest prizes, Drama, Comedy, and Limited or Anthology Series, all went to streaming services, signaling a shift in power.
Trending:
Disney Plus finished in second with 14 Emmys in all, including one for Hamilton and many for technical accomplishment, which were awarded during the Creative Arts Emmys the previous weekend.
HBO also took home many awards for its limited series “Mare of Easttown,” including a lead actress award for Kate Winslet’s depiction of a bereaved police investigator. Supporting performers Evan Peters and Julianne Nicholson were recognized for their performances.
NBC won the most Emmys among the broadcast networks, thanks to Saturday Night Live. CBS, which broadcast the Emmys this year, was totally left out.
Amazon and Hulu, two other streaming services, did not perform as well. Amazon won four Emmys last year, but Hulu only got one in 2020.
Netflix has been contending for the most Emmys since it first entered the race years ago. It has finished second to HBO several times, and came close to defeating the premium cabler in 2018 when the two matched with 23 victories apiece.
Other than bragging rights, reigning as the most Emmy-awarded network or service does not entitle you to anything. However, with media firms’ rivalry increasing, dominating the Emmy awards might be crucial for positioning one service above the rest as the go-to spot for the most awarded programs. Of course, Netflix and WarnerMedia’s HBO Max, as well as Disney Plus, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and Apple TV Plus, are all fighting for your membership dollars. But having the most Emmy awards is also appealing to top Hollywood talent.
This year, HBO and HBO Max topped all candidates with a total of 130 nominations, followed closely by Netflix with 129. Disney Plus came in third place with 71 nominations.
Overall, online video platforms accounted for more than half of the prizes given this year, cementing their position as the cutting edge of innovation based on Television Academy member vote.
