Laverne Cox describes transphobic attack: ‘It’s not safe if you’re a trans person’
After suffering a transphobic assault over the weekend, Laverne Cox is speaking out.
The star of “Orange Is the New Black” and LGBTQ advocate said on Instagram on Saturday that she and a friend were the victims of a transphobic assault that left them “in shock.”
Cox, 48, said in a live Instagram video that she and a male companion were strolling in Griffith Park earlier that day when a guy “very aggressively” asked for the time. After Cox’s buddy told him the time, the guy inquired, “Guy or girl?”
“The guy is like hitting my friend, and then my friend is going toward him,” said Cox.
“I pull out my phone and I call to dial 911, and all of a sudden it’s over and the guy is gone.”

Cox thinks the guy wanted her to answer his question instead of her companion after thinking on the event. “The guy really wanted me to answer so that he could spook whether I’m trans or not,” Cox said. “I don’t know why, I don’t know why it matters. At the end of the day, it’s like who cares? I’m in a hoodie and yoga pants, I’m completely covered up, I’ve got my mask on. Who cares if I’m trans? How does this affect your life?”
The experience left Cox frightened, and she said it reminded her of how dangerous the world can be. According to the National Center for Transgender Equality, 28 transgender individuals have been murdered in 2020, which is more than previous year’s number.
The 48-year-old claimed she has “been harassed and bullied my whole life” and was “lucky and grateful” that her buddy was in town this weekend. “It’s not safe in the world,” she said, referring to the assault.
“It’s not safe if you’re a trans person. Obviously, I know this well. It’s just really sad,” she sighed.
“It doesn’t matter who you are. You can be Laverne Cox, you know, or whatever that means. If you’re trans, you’re going to experience stuff like this.”
The two were unharmed physically, but they were shaken, and Cox questioned whether she should have filmed the incident or if there was anything she could have done to avoid it in the first place.
Cox concluded the video by urging her viewers not to blame themselves if anything similar occurs to them:
She stated her wish that everyone be “aware of their surroundings” and understands that “it’s not your fault” if you suffer an assault similar to the one she did. “It’s not your fault that there are people not cool with you existing in the world,” she said. “We have a right to walk in the park.”
