King Charles’ Refusal to Bestow Honour on Duke of Norfolk Linked to Coronation Dispute
The Duke of Norfolk’s failure to be appointed a Knight of the Garter by King Charles may have been a result of a disagreement during the coronation planning, according to one commentator.
Ephraim Hardcastle, a Daily Mail commentator, suggested that the Duke of Norfolk’s desire for radical changes to the ceremonial proceedings caused tension between him and the King.
In his column, Hardcastle also pointed out that despite two new appointments, there are still six vacancies within the Order of the Garter.
On June 19th, the Order of the Garter held its annual service, during which two new members were appointed.
Catherine Ashton, the former Labour Secretary, became a Lady’s Companion, while Chris Patten, the last Governor of Hong Kong, became a Knight’s Companion.

The Order of the Garter is the oldest and most prestigious order of chivalry in Britain, and each year it is celebrated with a procession and service at Windsor Castle.
Currently, the Order includes the monarch, senior members of the Royal Family, and 24 knights or ladies chosen for their contributions to public office, national life, or personal service to the King.
According to the Royal website, Garter Day traditionally begins with the King formally investing new companions with the insignia of the Order in the throne room at Windsor Castle.
The Order of the Garter was established by King Edward III in the Middle Ages, inspired by the tales of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.
Its purpose was to create a group of honorable knights known as the Order of the Garter.
Edward FitzAlan Howard, who is 66 years old, played a prominent role in the coronation service as part of the King and Queen’s motorcade.
As Earl Marshall, the highest-ranking peer in England, FitzAlan Howard organized the coronation of King Charles and participated in the midnight rehearsals for the prestigious event.
The Duke of Norfolk, in addition to his involvement in the coronation, also arranged a state funeral for Queen Elizabeth II last September.
This responsibility held great significance for the Duke, as his grandfather Howard had organized the late Queen’s coronation in 1953.
The Fitzalan Howards, according to Tatler, are one of Britain’s oldest aristocratic families, with a lineage that can be traced back to Edward I.
Currently, the Duke resides at Arundel Castle, his ancestral home in West Sussex, which has stood since the 11th century and overlooks the River Arun.
In conclusion, the failure of the Duke of Norfolk to receive the honor of becoming a Knight of the Garter from King Charles may have been influenced by their differing views on the coronation ceremony.
Despite this, the Order of the Garter continues to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to public life or personal service to the King.
The recent appointments of Catherine Ashton and Chris Patten highlight the ongoing importance and prestige of this ancient order.
