Julia Roberts ran off with Kiefer Sutherland’s best friend on their wedding day
Julia Roberts is the undisputed queen of rom-coms, having risen to the top of her profession after appearing in the classic Hollywood film Runaway Bride.
The renowned celebrity became a runaway bride when she was about to marry actor Keifer Sutherland in 1991.
Julia and Kiefer first saw one other during the first day of production for their 1990 film Flatliners, where they fell in love.
Roberts called off her brief engagement to Dylan McDermott after they fell in love.

Sutherland was still married to his first wife, Camelia Kath, at the time. They divorced later that year. In 1990, at the Golden Globe Awards, Roberts and Sutherland made their relationship public.
Julia thanked her “best friend – her beautiful blue-eyed, green-eyed best friend, who gives me everything” during her acceptance speech after winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in Steel Magnolias.
Sutherland is well-known for his colored eyes.
Their deep bond was quickly shattered when Kiefer was suspected of cheating on Julia with a stripper.
Kiefer, who has a well-documented history of alcoholism, temporarily moved out of Julia’s Hollywood house, shedding light on the realities of their relationship.
Amanda Rice, a dancer, claimed to have slept with Keifer Sutherland. Her tale was sold to several tabloids. He also informed her that Julia Roberts’ popularity from Pretty Woman had transformed her into a “insecure ice princess,” according to her.
Unnerved by the tarnishing of Keifer’s reputation, Julia was seen with a large rock around her ring finger barely a week later, announcing her engagement to him.
Then came the big day, or, more accurately, the big day that never arrived.
On the day they were due to marry, Kiefer returned to his own apartment and learned of the wedding cancellation via a mutual friend of his and Julia’s.
Julia married Sutherland in June 1991, according to People “It going to be the fantasy wedding of the decade. The four bridesmaids — makeup artist Lucienne Zammit, Julia’s agents, Elaine Goldsmith and Risa Shapiro, and actress Deborah Porter — had already picked up their $425 Manolo Blahnik shoes, dyed seafoam green to match the dresses.” The stunning bride had already finished getting dressed for her $8,000 gown. “Unexpectedly, Roberts called the wedding off, and Sutherland moved out of her house on the day of the ceremony,” according to the story.
Kiefer’s sadness was compounded when he discovered that his bride-to-be was out on a date with his closest buddy Jason Patrick on the day they were due to exchange vows.
The most dramatic aspect of the whole thing was that Patric was a close friend of Sutherland’s, and according to People, he was invited to the wedding at first, but then his invitation was revoked. “Julia and Kiefer had a big fight over that,” a source stated.
Meanwhile, she and Patric shared a turkey burger.
She and Patric also travelled to Ireland for their honeymoon instead of going to Sutherland’s 300-acre property in Whitefish, Montana. On their flight, they were said to be “practically making love.”
The pair slept at the Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin, where “the engagement ring was off her finger,” according to hotel personnel.
During his interview on The Jess Cagle Interview, Kiefer commented of the whole ordeal, “I think she had courage. It wasn’t what she wanted to do in the end. And I think it took a lot of courage, in amongst all of that other stuff, to be able to say, ‘I can’t do this.’”
“We were both young, and we were both very much in love, we had decided that we wanted to get married, but then this other thing kind of took over,” he explained.
“She was arguably the most famous woman in the world, and this wedding that was supposed to be something between the two of us, became something so big,” he added.
