Joker’s Joaquin Phoenix grew up in a sex cult

Joaquin Phoenix is set to play the Joker, but his upbringing in a sex cult was far from amusing.

This week, the 43-year-old was seen in full Joker make-up for the film about the Batman villain, who is a failed 1980s comic who turned to “crime and chaos.”

His childhood, on the other hand, was as disturbed as the roles he’s played.

The Gladiator and Walk The Line actor was raised in the Children of God, a cult in which indoctrinated adults slept with children and women used sex to recruit new male members.

One Hollywood producer put it this way: “The reason he’s good at playing traumatised is that he was traumatised.

“He grew up in a cult. His brother died in front of him. None of that presupposes someone who’s going to turn out normal.”

To the outer world, David Brandt Berg’s cult seemed pure.

Kids were taught to be terrified of the outside world as it was full of non believers who “wanted to kill them”.

But it was all a front to hide the terrible brainwashing that Charmed actress Rose McGowan, 46, and original Fleetwood Mac guitarist Jeremy Spencer, 71, as well as Joaquin’s hippie parents John and Arlyn Bottom, went through in the 1970s.

River, Joaquin’s eldest brother, once claimed to have lost his virginity at the age of four, however the Joker star insists that his parents were unaware of the cult’s inner workings.

“It’s guilt by association. I think it was really innocent on my parents’ part,” he says. “They really believed [in the religious aspect], but I don’t think most people see it that way.

“I think my parents thought they’d found a community that shared their ideals – cults rarely advertise themselves as such. The moment my parents realised there was something more to it, they got out.”

Sex was deemed the most glorious way to praise Jesus and members were instructed to “share” their husbands and wives.

Children should “explore their sexuality,” Brandt emphasized.

He stated that all sex delighted Jesus, whether it was between an adult and a kid or incest.

Abuse of children was prevalent. Davidito, Berg’s stepson, was also a victim.

When Davidito was seven years old, the cult released a child-rearing book that included images of Davidito’s “sexy experiences,” which included cult members performing sex acts on him.

After leaving the cult, he went by the name Ricky Rodriguez.

He viciously murdered a lady who reportedly assaulted him, then shot himself to death, unable to escape his memories. He was 29 years old at the time.

Juliana Buhring and her two sisters were born into the religion.

Joaquin may have been permanently scarred, according to the 38-year-old.

“Even if a child is removed from the Children of God at an early age and has blocked out or doesn’t recall exactly what happened, it’s highly likely the fear inbred from your birth will subconsciously affect you in later years,” she said.

Juliana co-wrote the best-selling Not Without My Sister, which chronicled her traumatic youth as a member of the cult.
