Jared Leto doubts Hollywood is ready for a gay leading man

A homosexual leading male, according to Jared Leto, would not have the same prospects in the film industry, which is still “very conservative.”

Leto is on the cover of the new issue of GQ Style, and in an interview with the magazine, he discusses what it means to be a leading man, saying that while he believes America would embrace a homosexual leading man, he doesn’t believe the industry would.

“I definitely don’t think a gay leading man would have the same opportunities as a straight leading man. I don’t think that. Not for a single second,” Leto said. “I don’t know if that’s offensive or not, but that’s my thought right now. It shouldn’t be that way. I don’t think you’ll have as many opportunities. And I think you could say the same for minorities. What a word, minority. Have we taken that word off the list yet? ‘Cause it should be. Anyway, no, I think that this is still a very conservative business.”

The actor, who earned an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as a transgender woman in Dallas Buyers Club, also discussed his own masculinity.

“We’re in an interesting time right now where people are exploring all kinds of different ideas of identity, not just masculinity or femininity. Maybe a whole new paradigm. I think that’s great. Because a lot of people probably are marginalized still, and finding a sense of identity is critical to empowering people. For myself, I have never had a specific idea of masculinity. I think its okay just to be yourself and whatever that entails,” he said.

Leto’s portrayal as the Joker in David Ayer’s comic-book blockbuster Suicide Squad, which debuts on Thursday, was the focus of the discussion.

Leto has stated that playing the Joker is an honor for him, since he follows in the footsteps of Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger. According to Entertainment Weekly, the 44-year-old actor will be playing the iconic role for the first time. “You’re kind of walking upon hallowed ground, and it deserves the very best that you can do. It takes over your life and that’s what I needed to do for myself,” he said.

Suicide Squad, directed by David Ayre and starring Jared Leto, was released on August 5th.
