Janet Jackson has spoken out following Justin Timberlake’s apology, in which he acknowledged he had ‘failed,’ both she and his ex-girlfriend Britney Spears.

In a planned stunt during the Super Bowl, Timberlake tore a piece of Jackson’s costume off, revealing her barely covered breast in the process, yet he was mostly spared criticism in the ensuing scandal.

On February 13, Jackson turned to Twitter to express her gratitude to her fans for their outpouring of love over the previous week. People began demanding an apology from Timberlake on behalf of Jackson following their controversial Super Bowl halftime show performance in 2004 after Timberlake received flak for his treatment of Spears following their 2002 separation.

“I was at home just the other day by myself and I began to cry. I was crying because I was so thankful for all that God has blessed me with. All that he has given me. For Him being in my life,” Janet says in the video.

“And I am so thankful for all of you being in my life. You’re so special to me,” Janet continued. “And I want to thank all of you for making ‘Control’ number one once again after 35 years. I never in a million years, I would never think that this would happen. I really appreciate you and I love you so, so much. Thank you.”

Tinashe appeared to have a role in persuading Janet to accept the apology on Twitter, writing:

‘Anyone who knows me knows Britney Spears and Janet Jackson are literally my two biggest idols in the whole universe and I just hope they know how much they mean to me/us.’

In reaction to widespread fan criticism over the recently released Framing Britney Spears documentary, Timberlake made a statement.

Timberlake said that he had “benefited from a system that condones misogyny and racism” and that he had “failed” both Jackson and Spears in his apologies.

Janet Jackson brought up the anguish Timberlake gave her when he laughed about the wardrobe malfunction while she was being blacklisted from the music industry in a rare interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2006. She said that she felt Timberlake had left her hanging “to  a certain degree.”

“I have to say just to let people know that Justin has reached out—we haven’t spoken, but he has reached out to speak with me,” she told Winfrey. “Like I said, friendship is very important to me and certain things you just don’t do to friends. In my own time, I’ll give him a call.”

Timberlake, on the other hand, was permitted to attend, winning two prizes for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album, as well as a Super Bowl invitation in 2018.
