Ian Somerhalder spoke with Julie Plec, the show’s creator, on a recent edition of Entertainment Weekly’s podcast Binge: The Vampire Diaries, about the show’s sixth season. During the interview, the actor admitted that, while he enjoyed portraying the vicious yet adorable Damon Salvatore, he was envious of one of his co-stars’ roles on the program.

During the interview, Somerhalder highlighted the introduction of show villain Kai Parker (Chris Wood) and why he was envious.

Somerhalder recalls his reservations about Damon becoming a nice — or at least better — man in the third season of EW’s Binge: The Vampire Diaries in episode 6 of EW’s Binge: The Vampire Diaries. Somerhalder adds, “I was so upset about the trajectory of Damon.  So much so that at one point I was sitting across from [executive producer] Julie [Plec] in her office in Atlanta almost in tears so angry about this.”

While EP and creator Julie Plec, along with her co-creator Kevin Williamson, explained to the actor that Damon was a more complex character who alternated between being the villain and being the good guy. She went on to say that she didn’t want Damon to be a “one trick pony” who exclusively played villains. Somerhalder, on the other hand, explains that it was precisely this that made him envious of Chris Wood’s Kai Parker.

“That’s why I was always so in love with what Chris Wood was doing onscreen because up until that moment, there was never a character in the show, other than Stefan in the Ripper age, that actually had the ability to not be so serious, to do horrific things but do it with a smile,” Somerhalder added.

Wood also made an appearance on the show, revealing that he got the idea for the character from serial murderer Ted Bundy if he was “really funny.”

“It was the worst person on the planet who might be a good hang if you can get him to shut up for a second,” he remarked. “That was sort of what I was always going for.”

The Vampire Diaries started on the CW in 2009 and continued for eight seasons until it was cancelled in 2017. The program was set in Mystic Falls, Virginia, a fictitious town where mortals and vampires coexisted.

The program generated two spin-off series, The Originals and Legacies, and created breakout stars out main actors Ian Somerhalder, Nina Dobrev, and Paul Wesley.

Wood recurred as the wicked Kai Parker in the next spin-off program Legacies in February 2020, reuniting with co-stars Kaylee Bryant, Jenny Boyd, and his brother-in-law Alaric (Matthew Davis).
