Christina Applegate regrets turning down ‘Legally Blonde’ role
Christina Applegate came close to portraying the popular Gemini vegetarian.
On Monday, at the Los Angeles premiere of her new film Vacation, the 43-year-old actress said to ETonline that she was “scared” of the role played by Reese Witherspoon in the smash 2001 comedy.
In the late 1990s, Applegate had just finished her role on Married… With Children when the opportunity arose. On the sitcom, the actress famously played Kelly, the sassy daughter of the Bundy family, and she was plotting her next move.
“The script came along my way and it was right after I had just finished ‘Married,’ and it was a blonde who in that first script didn’t win it but ends up going to Yale, or Harvard, I don’t remember,” Applegate said of the 2001 movie. “I got scared of kind of repeating myself.”
As any Cosmo girl knows, Reese Witherspoon was cast in the role of the Ivy League blonde bombshell. The comedy, which resulted in two sequels and a musical, was a major hit, grossing more than $140 million at the international box office on a $18 million budget.

Applegate subsequently admitted that she may have made a mistake, saying, “What a stupid move that was!”
Applegate believes she is happy with the way her career has progressed, despite her “stupid” decision.
”I never really being highly successful. If you never make the A-list and stay at a nice respectable B, you can sustain it longer.”
While she regretted declining the part, the Vacation star expressed her gratitude to Reese Witherspoon for landing the role of the bubbly blonde lawyer.
“Reese deserved it, and she did a much better job than I ever could. that’s her path,” Applegate said.
Applegate wasn’t the only ’90s TV star who was considered for the part. Tori Spelling was also considered for the role of Elle Woods, and Chloe Sevigny turned down the role of Vivian from Selma Blair.
While Applegate may have made a questionable decision at the time, she went on to carve out her own path, appearing in Jesse, Friends, Samantha Who?, and Up All Night on TV and in films such as View From the Top, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, and The Sweetest Thing on the big screen.
