Benedict Cumberbatch was asleep when was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role for The Power of the Dog.

The Western drama was released on November 17, 2021. Jane Champion directed the film, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, and Kodi Smit-McPhee and is based on Thomas Savage’s novel of the same name. The Power of the Dog follows Phil Burbank (Cumberbatch), a callous, hardened cowboy who torments his brother’s new wife, Rose (Dunst), and her little son, Peter (Smit-McPhee), until he is struck by the possibility of love.

The movie garnered a slew of nominations for the 94th Academy Awards, as predicted. The film received a total of 12 nominations, making it the most-nominated Academy Award winner in 2022. The Power of the Dog was nominated for Best Picture with Dune, King Richard, and West Side Story.

Meanwhile, Plemons, Smit-McPhee, and Dunst have all been nominated for Oscars for Best Supporting Actor/Actress. Cumberbatch, on the other hand, was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal of Burbank.

Cumberbatch admits to sleeping throughout his significant Oscar nomination in an interview with The New York Times. He says that everyone had received the news before him. He found out later that morning, while hurrying his three boys to school.  According to Screenrant, he stated, “I think everyone heard about it [Oscar nomination] but me. I was asleep and I didn’t turn my phone on. I got an email last night from someone at Netflix saying, ‘Look, no matter what happens we’re so proud, it’s such a great movie and such a great performance.”

He also said that his children were perplexed by what was going on. Cumberbatch believed it was a special occasion to share with them, and he goes on to explain.

“I’m a dad of three small boys and I’m on my own — my wife’s in New York — so I’m trying to get them ready for school and get them in a car, get them going. But I kind of realized, “Oh, my phone, I better get it,” just as we were finishing breakfast. So I turned it on and explained to three slightly confused little faces what it meant and why I was giggling and smiling a lot, and they had varying responses. I don’t talk about my private life, but that it is something I’m willing to share. It was a lovely moment to have with my boys.”

Cumberbatch was widely expected to receive a Best Actor nomination well before the 2022 Oscar nominations were announced. Since being nominated for The Imitation Game in 2014, this is his second chance to win an Academy Award. The Academy Awards are one of the most coveted honors an actor can earn, and the odds might be daunting. Cumberbatch, on the other hand, was not quite as anxious as one might think, since he slept soundly during the nominations. This was the result, not of him being indifferent to them, but simply of him continuing to place importance in every day life. Getting rest to send his three children off to school and experiencing the happy occasion with them was more essential and useful than impatiently waiting by a phone all morning.
