The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge celebrated their return to their former university town with a quiet romantic lunch .

Before a day of royal festivities, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge spent the night in St Andrews, Scotland, where they met as undergraduates 20 years ago.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who used to frequent Pizza Express in St Andrews as undergraduates, opted for the more upscale Forgan’s.

They had attempted to keep their date a secret, but by the time they were finished, a sizable crowd had gathered outside, hoping to catch a glimpse of the royal couple.

Even Forgan’s off-duty manager Marc was unaware that Kate and William had reserved a table.

The pair requested a private table room at the rear of the restaurant, which has hosted prominent golfers such as Rory McIlroy.

“There was a crowd outside once they left but as far as inside goes it was quiet,” said manager Marc, who did not want to reveal his last name.

“There was no pomp and ceremony or fanfare, they were very nice and when they left they were very complementary.”

“Word certainly reached me we had guests come in,” the manager, who was off duty when the pair arrived, was told by workers at home.

The royal couple stayed in town ahead of activities on the beach and at the university yesterday morning.

In their first year there in 2001, William and Kate stayed a few doors away in St Salvator’s hall of residence and became friends.

When he paid £200 for a front row ticket at a charity student fashion show, Kate strutted confidently down the runway in a see-through lace dress that showed her black underwear, she piqued his interest.

Kate is also credited for motivating him to continue his studies after he pondered dropping out in his first year. He enrolled in a Master of Arts degree program in History of Art, but after two years changed his focus to Geography.

He and Kate then began sharing a four-bedroom Edwardian home in Fife with other students in their second year. Kate was dating fellow student Rupert Finch at the time.

Following their first year of living in halls of residence, they moved into a house shared with other students, and it is rumored that the future king and queen began dating around Christmas 2003.

The pair returned to the campus yesterday to speak with students about their experiences dealing with the epidemic.

They were informed about the Can Do initiative, which has hosted hundreds of activities such as discussions, dancing lessons, first aid training, and film screenings.

William said: “Has it been hard throughout lockdown [stuck] in your rooms? For freshers it’s really difficult trying to work out who they know and their friends.”

The pair also assisted in the completion of a painting of socially distant hearts on the university’s St Salvator’s Lawn, which was created as part of the Can Do program to encourage students to spend more time outside securely.
