During an appearance with Entertainment Tonight, Oprah Winfrey addressed the rumor that she would be appointed godmother to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s newborn girl. “I don’t need to be a godmother,” the US talk show presenter said, because she will already play a significant part in the child’s upbringing. Since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex chose to quit the Royal Family in 2020, Oprah has been a big supporter of them.

“I’m a godmother by default, you know, I’m a neighbour, I’m a friend and all that,” Oprah, who resides in Montecito, California, tells presenter Kevin Frazier.

The media mogul then revealed the unexpected reason for her refusal of the role: her age. “I think you probably need someone younger to be the godmother,” she said, causing presenter Kevin Frazier to chuckle.

Oprah may not be the youngest of Harry and Meghan’s Hollywood pals, but she is definitely more than prepared to be a child’s mentor. The 67-year-old is already godmother to her closest friend Gayle King’s children, Kirby and Will, and is said to have always been involved in their lives. Because to the COVID-19 epidemic, she even hosted Kirby’s wedding in her Montecito home in December 2020.

Oprah adds that she is “so happy” for the duke and duchess, with whom she has become friends since attending their wedding in 2018.

She also said that she “loved” the name Lilibet Diana and promised to give them something special for Father’s Day.

It would not be the first time Oprah has given a gift to Harry and Meghan.

Following the birth of Harry and Meghan Markle’s baby Archie in 2019, the TV presenter gave him a book collection as a “welcome to the world” gift.

At the time, she said, “This baby will have enough books to last a lifetime!”

In an interview shortly after the wedding, Oprah said, “Let me just tell you about that royal wedding, it was transformative, it was more than a wedding.”

“It was a cultural moment and you could not be there or watch on television and not feel that there was a shift that just happened in the middle of it. It’s bigger than them.”

Oprah’s comments follow a tumultuous few months for the Sussexes, during which they became parents for the second time and appeared in many dramatic interviews with Oprah.

The pair accused the Royal Family of ignoring their mental health, refusing to remove negative stories about the Duchess, and denying their son a title and security in the interview, which aired in March.

Prince Harry even expressed concern about returning to London, citing the torment of his late mother, Princess Diana, through during her lifetime.

The interview caused a PR problem for the monarchy and strained ties between the Sussexes and the Royal Family.

Oprah also collaborated with Harry to co-produce The Me You Can’t See, an Apple TV+ docuseries on mental health and wellness.
