Harry’s daughter Lilibet isn’t the first royal born in the USA
While Prince Harry’s decision to move across the pond stunned the globe, the birth of his baby abroad in California isn’t exactly groundbreaking.
Meghan Markle’s press secretary announced the news of the baby’s birth on Sunday 6th June, saying that both mother and baby, Lili, are doing well.
Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor is the second British royal to be born in the United States, namely in California. Lord Frederick Windsor and his wife Sophie Winkleman welcomed daughter Maud Elizabeth Daphne Marina Windsor into the world in Los Angeles. Lord Frederick Windsor is the son of Prince Michael of Kent, the Queen’s cousin.
Maud, the eldest grandchild of the Queen’s cousin, was born in Los Angeles in 2013, when the royal couple was still residing there. Prior to the birth of their second child, Isabella Windsor, the family returned to the United Kingdom, where they now reside.
The two kids are the only heirs to the throne who were born in the United States.

Maud is now enrolled in Thomas’s Battersea with Prince George and Princess Charlotte, Prince William and Kate Middleton’s children. Winkleman, who is 40 years old, is still working as an actress.
Maud was 42nd in line when she was born, but with the births of other royals such as Archie, Prince Louis, and Princess Charlotte, she has been moved down ten places.
Princess Madeleine of Sweden, together with her American husband Christopher O’Neill and their three children, the eldest of whom, Princess Leonore, was born in New York, are other royals who reside in the United States.
Lili is the first of the queen’s 11 great-grandchildren to be born abroad. Maud is 52nd in the line of succession to the British monarchy, while the infant is eighth.
Lilibet Diana, like her older brother Archie, will most certainly be a dual American-British citizen. Due to the George V Letters Patent of 1917, she will not be given the title of Princess yet.
The news of Lili’s arrival was greeted with joy by the Queen and the royal family.
“The Queen, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, and The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been informed and are delighted with the news of the birth of a daughter for The Duke and Duchess of Sussex,” a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said.
The announcement was not accompanied by any photographs of the infant or the Sussexes. And in lieu of presents, the couple has asked that people interested learn about or support charity groups that help women and girls, such as Girls Inc., Harvest Home, CAMFED, or the Myna Mahila Foundation.
