Jon Hamm has revealed he wasn’t “quite ready for game time” when he lost his virginity.

When the Mad Men actor had sex for the first first time, he was a 19-year-old college student, and Hamm freely says he wasn’t quite at ease getting into bed with the lady.

“There’s no version of it that’s not awkward,” he told ELLE. “As much as I practiced, I was still not quite ready for game time.”

Hamm, 45 admitted that “maybe it’s easy for some people … it certainly wasn’t easy for me.”

Since playing stylish advertising executive Don Draper in the popular period drama Mad Men, Jon has gained notoriety as a s=x symbol. Jon split from his longtime fiancée Jennifer Westfeldt in September 2015 after dating her for 18 years.

Growing up wasn’t easy for the Mad Men star in other areas either, as he recalls feeling a “deep tragedy” when his mother died of cancer when he was 10.

He said: “[My father] was twice widowed. He was divorced from my mum when she died, but even so, there’s a deep sense of tragedy in that. I never had the opportunity to, as an adult, sit down and talk to him about that. It’s a real loss. I was quasi-adopted by my friends’ families.”

His mother died from colon cancer when Hamm was just 10 years old. His father died a decade later. The ‘Keeping Up with the Joneses’ actor says he’s doing OK now though, as he feels “incredibly lucky” to have other parental figures in his life.

“And even today I get e-mails or cards from these women who, for lack of a better word, were my mom. We talk about what it means to be a family,” he said. “Mostly it’s about showing up. And being aware enough to check in and say, ‘How are you doing?’ I’ve been incredibly lucky to have these people in my life.”

Today, the actor has plenty of advice for his younger self.

“The best thing you could say is: Appreciate it,” he said. “Struggle is part of the journey. That’s what I’ve learned in my forties: This too shall pass.”

And it appears the 45-year-old actor, who sought treatment for alcohol abuse last year, is not yet ready for another romance.

Asked what he would want to tell his next date, he replied, “Oh God. I don’t know. I don’t think I’m ready to answer that yet.”
