Every time we get a glimpse of Princess Charlotte, she looks stunning, but have you noticed that she always wears dresses?

On public events with her family, the three-year-old is always wearing dresses—often floral babydoll frocks.

It turns out there’s a very good explanation for this, and it all stems from a decision taken by the Duchess of Cambridge, Charlotte’s mother.

Kate prefers to dress her children in timeless outfits so that photographs do not seem dated.

Charlotte is clad in dresses, according to childrenswear designer Rachel Riley, who has dressed Prince George, to avoid being “out of date,” as she previously told The Telegraph.

“If you look at photos of young royal girls – from Princess Anne to Charlotte, you will notice that they tend to wear smocked dresses as little girls when they are in public with their parents,” Marlene Koenig, royal analyst and editor of the Royal Musings site, informs BAZAAR. She went on to say that young female royals frequently dress in “a clean, traditional look.”

While these clothes may be considered dated, they are unmistakably conventional, and it should be remembered that the royals do adhere to a strict dress code.

However, it is assumed that the children wear informal clothing at home and shorts and dresses to events, in line with the formality of the occasion.

Kate likes to wear dresses that are “classic” and “timeless,” according to Rachel, rather than clothes that will attract even more attention to her daughters, who already get a lot of attention from the media and royal fans.

“The reason why I design clothes that way is because if they wear very simple things, it’s about the child, and it’s timeless in that you can’t really date a specific photo or put them in something that seems out of date,” she said.

“I think they are going for clothing that is classic and timeless, rather than clothes that draw attention to them.”

Princess Charlotte, like Meghan Markle, has no formal royal prohibition on wearing skirts. “There are no rules about no pants. If the Duchess is in a dress in public and Charlotte is with her, most likely Charlotte, at this age, will be in a dress – also in formal portraits, or on the balcony for the Trooping of the Colour,” Koenig continues.

“I expect that when the kids are at home, playing in the nursery or in the backyard, they are wearing more casual clothes,” Koenig says. Princess Charlotte did, in fact, wear shorts while playing with George and their nanny in 2016, but it wasn’t an official public outing.

So what about the Queen’s inclination? Does Her Majesty get to choose the outfits for her great-grandchildren? “The queen has no say in what Charlotte wears,” says Koenig, but the tots still do “Sunday’s best in public.”
