Sir Trevor Phillips Claims Meghan Markle Didn’t Identify as Black Before Marrying Prince Harry

Former politician Sir Trevor Phillips has faced backlash after making scathing comments about Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex.

In a conversation with Piers Morgan, Sir Trevor stated that Meghan had to learn how to be black after marrying Prince Harry in 2018.

He revealed that Meghan didn’t consider herself particularly black before joining the royal family.

However, these comments were met with strong criticism from fans of the Sussexes, who questioned the broadcaster’s statement.

One supporter asked, “What the hell does he mean?

How do you learn to be black?

How do you learn to be white or Hispanic or Asian for that matter?

All this division and identity by race is what causes the problems.”

Another user emphasized that ethnicity is an integral part of one’s identity and shapes their life experiences.

Social media users expressed their disappointment in Sir Trevor’s remarks on this sensitive topic.

One user, Myrtle Knits, questioned why he was suddenly engaging in abusive behavior towards Meghan, considering her background.

The user pointed out that Meghan’s mother is black, indicating that she is aware of her racial identity.

The user urged an end to the hateful abuse.

Appearing on a chat show, Sir Trevor defended his comments, highlighting Meghan’s distinguished background.

He explained, “I think people are mistaken about who Meghan Markle is.

She herself said that until she became this princess, she didn’t consider herself particularly black, and that’s understandable.

I grew up in Los Angeles in the richest black enclave anywhere in the United States.

She attended a private Roman Catholic school, and in a sense, race was never part of her background.”

These remarks from Sir Trevor came after Meghan discussed her experiences with race during an episode of her previous podcast, Archetypes.

In a conversation with pop star Mariah Carey, Meghan revealed, “If there’s ever been a time in my life that was more focused on my race, it’s once I started dating my husband.

Then I began to understand what it was like.

I was treated like a black woman.

Because until then, I was treated like a mixed woman.

And things have really changed.”

During their highly publicized interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan and Harry also shared that a member of the royal family had inquired about the potential darkness of their son Archie’s skin before his birth.

Harry noted that speculating about such matters is common in every black family, just as white families speculate about the color of their child’s hair and eyes.

Sir Trevor further commented on Meghan’s situation, suggesting that she had to learn how to navigate her racial identity while in the public eye.

He believed that she missed an opportunity to make a significant impact in this regard.

Sir Trevor remarked, “The point I really want to make about Meghan Markle is that she had to learn how to be black on the job, as it were, and I think she made a bit of a mess with that.

She didn’t take the advice, which, in a sense, is why I think they wasted the opportunity to prove something important about this country.

We have the largest group of uniquely mixed races anywhere in the developed world who were brought up through romance rather than coercion and would have been the standard bearers for that.”
