Scarlett Johansson says Joaquin Phoenix hated her org@sm scene

Scarlett Johansson has shared an uncomfortable experience she had on the set of the film “Her” with Joaquin Phoenix.

The film, which was released in 2014, follows Theodore Twombly (played by Phoenix), a man who forms a relationship with an artificially intelligent virtual assistant named Samantha (voiced by Johansson).

During a recent appearance on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, Johansson spoke about a scene in the film in which her character records herself having an org@sm.

The actress revealed that Phoenix was so uncomfortable during the recording that he had to leave the set.

“We tried to get through one take, and he was, like, losing it,” Johansson said.

“I was fine. Joaquin was not – he was so upset about it. He left the studio, and now I’m in this box by myself, and I’m like, ‘I can’t do it alone. I need him to come back.’ He needed a break; he took a break, and he came back in.”

Johansson went on to say, “You don’t want to hear your voice ever. You definitely don’t want to hear what you sound like having an org@sm. It’s so gross. It was so bizarre.”

The actress also addressed her own experiences of being “hypersexualized” and “objectified” in Hollywood.

“I kind of became objectified and pigeonholed in this way where I felt like I wasn’t getting offers for work for things that I wanted to do,” she said.

Johansson shared that at one point, she felt like people thought she was “40 years old” and that it stopped being something that was desirable.

She added, “It somehow stopped being something that was desirable and something that I was fighting against.”

Despite the progress made for young women actors in the industry through the #MeToo movement, Johansson acknowledged that there is still more work to be done.

“I’ve come to this realization that it’s important to understand progress and change when it’s really meaningful – it takes two steps forward and two steps back, and then it gets better and then it gets worse,” she said.
