Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt reminisce about their days on ‘Growing Pains’

Until recently, Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio had never worked together on a film before, but they did cross paths early in their careers.

Pitt and DiCaprio discussed briefly missing each other on Growing Pains, which aired from 1985 to 1992, while sitting down with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood costar Margot Robbie and director Quentin Tarantino for NBC’s Today.

“No. But we did start on the same television show,” Pitt explained. DiCaprio added, “Growing Pains.” But neither actor had remembered when they appeared on the show. “I mean, we’re talking decades ago, but we were on the same television show,” DiCaprio said.

Let us fill in the gaps for you: Pitt appeared in two episodes of Growing Pains as a guest star. In 1987, he made his first appearance as Jeff Keith, a new student and Carol Seaver’s crush, in season three. Pitt returned in season four to play Jonathan Keith, Ben Seaver’s favorite rock star. (Fun fact: all of this occurred just a few years before Pitt’s breakthrough appearance in Thelma & Louise.)

During the show’s seventh and final season, from 1991 to 1992, DiCaprio had a more permanent role as Luke Bower, a homeless youngster who was taken in by the Seaver family. The next year, DiCaprio was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.

After decades apart, the two are reunited in Tarantino’s ninth picture, about the evolving environment of Hollywood in 1969. Pitt, 55, plays Rick Dalton, an elderly actor, while DiCaprio, 44, plays his faithful stuntman Cliff Booth.

Brad sat down to talk about the Quentin Tarantino film in a thoughtful mood.

‘In my next life, who should I come back as? Harry Smith, the host, posed the question, presenting a choice between Brad and Leonardo. ‘I don’t know about him,’ Pitt, who divorced Angelina Jolie in 2016, said. ‘I shine up well on the outside, but it’s a bit dicey my friend.’ He finished with a wink and a dazzling smile.

While they’ve come a long way, they’re still fans who are enthralled by other Hollywood stars, recently saying that meeting the late Luke Perry on the set of “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” left them speechless.

Pitt told Esquire, “We were like kids in the candy shop because I remember going to the studios and (‘90210’) was going on and he was that icon of coolness for us as teenagers.”

The film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood will be released in theaters on July 26.
