Kate honored the Queen with special jewelry at Prince Philip’s funeral
The Royal Family had a very emotional Saturday when they said their goodbyes to Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, who died recently at the age of 99.
While attending the funeral of the monarch’s husband, Prince Philip, the Duchess of Cambridge paid a subtle tribute to the queen.
Both the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are believed to have had a tight friendship with Philip throughout his life, as well as a deep connection with the Queen, to whom Kate paid tribute with her jewelry.
The Duchess of Cambridge wore a necklace and earrings with unique links to Queen Elizabeth and her 73-year husband, Prince Philip, while attending his funeral at St. George’s Chapel on Saturday.
Kate, 39, wore the Queen’s Four Row Japanese Pearl Choker for her necklace, which she had previously worn at the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh’s 70th wedding anniversary party in 2017. The Queen originally loaned the choker to Princess Diana during a state tour to the Netherlands in 1982, according to Her Majesty’s Jewel Vault.

When combined with the duchess’s black Roland Mouret gown, the necklace stood out. According to The Court Jeweller, the item, which has four strands of pearls and a diamond clasp, was a gift to the queen from the Japanese government and was designed by Garrard. It was previously seen on the sovereign during a tour to Bangladesh in the 1980s.
Kate also wore the Bahrain Pearl Earrings, which were sent to the Queen on her 1947 wedding to Philip. A big round diamond hangs from the earrings, with a small circular diamond hanging below it. Three baguette diamonds dangle from there, with three more tiny diamonds leading to the pearl hanging below.
Kate chose a black veil and matching jewelry, all of which are said to be on long-term loan from Her Majesty (and part of Her Majesty’s personal collection). Kate’s decision to wear the Queen’s jewelry is a unique way for her to express her devotion to the recently widowed queen.
Kate has previously worn the sentimental earrings for many occasions, including for the Remembrance Day service in 2016, just one year after she wore them for the same function the year before.
The Duchess of Cambridge joined the other guests at the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral on Saturday at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, while her husband Prince William took part in the procession. Just 30 participants were able to attend the service due to COVID-19 protocols.
William previously issued a statement paying tribute to his deceased grandfather.
“I will always be grateful that my wife had so many years to get to know my grandfather and for the kindness he showed her,” part of his note read. “I will never take for granted the special memories my children will always have of their great-grandpa coming to collect them in his carriage and seeing for themselves his infectious sense of adventure as well as his mischievous sense of humour!”
“My grandfather was an extraordinary man and part of an extraordinary generation,” William concluded his statement. “Catherine and I will continue to do what he would have wanted and will support The Queen in the years ahead. I will miss my Grandpa, but I know he would want us to get on with the job.”
Kate, like the rest of the guests, was dressed in black, with a face mask.
The Queen posted a previously unseen picture of herself and Prince Philip relaxing together in a beauty spot in the Coyles of Muick in Aberdeenshire, a 30-minute drive from the Queen’s Scottish residence Balmoral, ahead of the funeral. Sophie, Countess of Wessex, Prince Edward’s wife, took it.
Following the hour-long service, William and Prince Harry, who had been reunited for the first time in over a year at the funeral, were seen walking and talking together alongside Kate.
