Johnny Depp stayed in character as Jack Sparrow 24/7: Bodyguard

Johnny Depp, known for his eccentric acting style and love for pushing creative boundaries, may be even more dedicated to his craft than previously thought.

According to Rick Wood, a security guard who was hired in 2015 to protect Depp and his then-wife Amber Heard while they were in Australia, the actor spent much of his time on set of the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie, Dead Men Tell No Tales, fully immersed in the role of Jack Sparrow.

“He stays in character so he’s pretty much Jack Sparrow – great bloke,” Wood said. “I couldn’t see it in him and in my industry you know who’s a wife-beater and who’s not.”

Wood’s comment about “who’s a wife-beater and who’s not” likely refers to the ongoing drama between Depp and Heard, who have been locked in a legal battle over allegations of domestic violence.

Depp’s commitment to staying in character as Jack Sparrow is not entirely surprising.

The role, which has become one of his most iconic, is one that he has returned to multiple times throughout his career.

He is even known for keeping a Captain Jack Sparrow costume with him at all times.

Despite his association with the infamous pirate, Depp has also played a wide range of memorable characters in the past, including Cry-Baby, Ed Wood, and Ichabod Crane.

After his work on the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Depp began to take on more unconventional roles, often transforming himself beyond recognition.

Though some of these characters may be considered over-the-top or silly, like his portrayal of Willy Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, they are all memorable and demonstrate Depp’s commitment to fully embodying each character.

In 2018, Depp shared some of his thoughts on acting and gave some basic advice for aspiring actors.

He also spoke about the importance of “being” in a role, saying “the most difficult part about acting is just to be—to be in a state of being.”

For Depp, this often involves extensive makeup and costume work, something he appears to enjoy and take great care in.

Depp’s former security guard’s revelation about his dedication to staying in character as Jack Sparrow highlights the actor’s extreme commitment to his craft.
