Christina Hendricks ‘outraged’ after being discriminated against
Christina Hendricks, the Mad Men actress, has expressed her frustration about not getting acting roles due to her curves.
The 42-year-old actress has said that before her breakthrough role in Mad Men, she was often told that her body shape was not suitable for the characters she was auditioning for.
This included roles such as police officers or medics.
“I auditioned for things where I knew I killed the audition.
I knew I did,” Hendricks told The Times. “It was like. ‘Oh, should I give you my sizes now, or…?’ And they would call up and say, ‘We just don’t think that a doctor would look like that’.

Hendricks says that there should be a variety of body types represented on television. “There should be a million different body types [on television].
It’s outrageous that there aren’t. And it’s outrageous that we’re sitting here having this conversation and it’s even a thing,” she added.
However, her career took a major turn when she landed the role of Joan in the period drama Mad Men, which ran from 2007 until 2015.
Since then, she has played a number of “amazing strong-a**ed, powerful women”.
“I walk [into my audition] a little bit defeated. But I just put on my game face and did it.
And I got this role. And ever since then I get all these, like, amazing strong-a**ed, powerful women,” she said.
Hendricks has long been praised for her curvaceous figure, but she said she never tried to lose weight to conform to Hollywood’s standards.
“I know I have a figure and I long ago decided that I wouldn’t starve myself and try to become one of those typically skinny actresses. I’m completely comfortable with my body,” she said.
She added that she was flattered by the attention her curves have received from men, but also from women who aspire to achieve a similar body shape.
“It’s such a compliment, because of all those times I had agents who were like, ‘You have to lose some weight,’ and all of a sudden, people are celebrating it
. It’s like: ‘Oh, thank you! Thank you for letting me be me.'”
Hendricks has previously spoken about her frustration with the lack of diversity in the entertainment industry. In a 2017 interview with The Guardian, she said:
“I still go on auditions and they say, ‘I’m sorry, we’re not going ethnic.’ I’m like, ‘What? You mean like 50% of the population?'”
She also called for more diverse representation in the media: “We’re humans. We’re all different.
We’re all the same. We all want to be represented, we all want to see ourselves represented, and we want to be heard.”
The Mad Men star has become an icon for body positivity, and has been praised for promoting a healthy body image. She has been featured in several publications discussing her views on body image and how she learned to accept and love her curves.
“I’m really proud of the fact that I’m getting more of these really strong roles,” she said. “I think it’s a really positive thing, and I hope it continues for all women of all shapes and sizes.”
Hollywood has long been criticized for its narrow beauty standards and the unrealistic expectations it puts on actors and actresses to conform to them.
This has led to a culture of body shaming and the perpetuation of harmful stereotypes about what a “beautiful” or “desirable” body should look like.
However, there are signs that things are starting to change.
In recent years, there has been a growing movement towards body positivity, with more and more people speaking out against the unrealistic beauty standards perpetuated by the media.
Actresses like Hendricks, who have embraced their curves and refused to conform to Hollywood’s narrow beauty standards, are leading the way in this movement.
By speaking out about their experiences and challenging the status quo, they are helping to create a more diverse and inclusive entertainment industry that represents all people, regardless of their body type.
As Hendricks said in a previous interview with The Guardian, “I hope that people are able to see themselves in me and know that it’s okay to be different, and it’s okay to be themselves.”
