Chevy Chase doesn’t mind being a homophobic jerk

Famed actor and comedian Chevy Chase is responding to allegations of his aggressive and abusive conduct on set by expressing anger and asserting that he doesn’t “give a crap. I am who I am.”

In a CBS Sunday Morning interview, Chase addressed his longstanding reputation for harassing and mistreating co-stars, with incidents dating back to the 1970s, often backed up by multiple witnesses.

The 78-year-old offered no apologies when questioned about his past behavior in today’s context.

“I don’t give a crap,” he stated.

“I am who I am. And I like who I am. I don’t care. And it’s part of me that I don’t care. And I’ve thought about that a lot. And I don’t know what to tell you, man. I just don’t care.”

Quite endearing.

Chase also displayed no regret when confronted with recent accusations of racism and sexual harassment.

Previously, actor Donald Glover mentioned racist comments Chase made while they co-starred on NBC’s sitcom Community, including an alleged remark, “People think you’re funnier because you’re Black.”

Chase’s former SNL co-workers have also spoken out.

In 2018, Pete Davidson commented on Chase’s negative behavior, stating “F*ck Chevy Chase. He’s just a genuinely bad, racist person and I don’t like him. He’s a putz.”

In 2020, Will Farrell recounted an incident during Chase’s appearance on SNL where his behavior was so terrible that the cast thought he might be on drugs.

“I don’t know if he was on something, but he was just kind of going around the room and systematically riffing,” Farrell recalled.

“First it was on the guys, playfully making fun, until, when he got to one of our female writers, he made some reference like, ‘Maybe you can give me a hand job later.’ In hindsight, I wish we’d all gotten up and walked out of the room.”

Other SNL veterans, including Jane Curtin, Laraine Newman, and Gilda Radner, have confirmed witnessing Chase’s poor behavior, including a physical altercation between him and then-SNL star Bill Murray.

An especially troubling incident involved Terry Sweeney, SNL’s first openly gay cast member.

In 2017, Sweeney alleged that Chase harassed him about his sexuality in 1985 while guest-hosting, telling him to “lick my balls” in front of fellow cast member Jon Lovitz.

Chase also proposed a sketch featuring Sweeney as a gay man dying of AIDS who is weighed weekly on the show. Sweeney later described Chase as “a monster.”

Chase’s misconduct extends beyond the entertainment industry.

In 2018, a minor traffic dispute led to him attempting to physically assault another driver, shouting, “I am going to ruin your lives!”
