Cate Blanchett has revealed that she had a “threesome” with her husband and her Best Actress Award from the Oscars.

The actress, who won the award for her role in Woody Allen’s latest flick Blue Jasmine, joked that she couldn’t bear to let the statuette out of her sight, so she and Andrew Upton shared the bed with it on Sunday night.

Speaking on Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show just hours after the ceremony, she joked: “It’s the closest my husband and I have ever come to a threesome.”

The 44-year-old beauty admitted accepting the award was a bizarre experience.

She explained: “I was so stressed.

I don’t think I drank that much last night but it was such a release of adrenaline.” Cate also admitted to the host – who had presented the awards – that she had only had “a little bit of sleep” before arriving at her show.

Ellen had arranged to have pizza delivered to the A-list audience at the Oscars, but Cate – who almost missed her Oscars win – had to stop for food on her way home because she was away from her seat when the grub was distributed inside the Dolby Theater in Hollywood.

She said: “I went to the bar to try and get something to eat and then they wouldn’t let me back in! But all those actresses were hoovering it up so I wouldn’t have got a piece anyway.”

Cate is married to playwright and screenwriter Andrew Upton and they have three sons together.

They are known for being a very private couple and rarely discuss their relationship in public.

However, Cate did reveal on the talk show that she and Andrew are quite competitive in their work.

“We’re both writers and we both write in the same study, so competition is pretty much rife in our house,” she told Ellen.

“But I won this one, so he’s going to have to suck it up.”

Cate also opened up about her plans for the future, saying that she is looking forward to taking a break from acting and spending more time with her family.

“I’m not planning on working much in 2014,” she said.

“I’ve got some theatre commitments that I’ll fulfill, but it’s really about finding a balance between work and home.”

Despite her success at the Oscars, Cate has faced criticism recently for working with Woody Allen, who has been accused of s**ual abuse by his daughter Dylan Farrow.

When asked about the controversy on the talk show, she defended her decision to work with the director.

“It’s obviously been a long and painful situation for the family and I hope they find resolution and peace,” she said.

“But as an actor, you don’t know anything when you’re making a film.

You don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes.

You just turn up and you do your job.

So I’m not privy to any of that.”

Cate also spoke about the lack of roles for older women in Hollywood, saying that it’s important for women to continue to work and be represented on screen.

“We need to keep telling stories about women and have them seen on screen,” she said.

“It’s not just about actresses, it’s about all women.

We need to keep pushing forward.”
