Billie Eilish Confirms She Has Tourette Syndrome
Billie Eilish announced on Tuesday (November 27) that she has Tourette Syndrome, which she was diagnosed with when she was a youngster.
After compilation of videos showing her tics leaked on the internet, she confirmed the disorder on her Instagram story.
Tourette Syndrome, is a form of Tic disorder. Tics are “repeated, sudden, rapid, nonrhythmic muscle movements including sounds or vocalizations.” According to the Tourette Association of America, Tourette Syndrome shows itself as uncontrollable and repetitive motions or vocalization.
Eilish’s tics are simply physical and “not super noticeable to others.”
She stated she was diagnosed as a youngster and that her family and close friends “know it as a part of me.”

Eilish remarked on her Instagram story, “I’ve never mentioned [my Tourette Syndrome] on the internet because nobody thinks I’m dead*ss.”
“I’ve taught myself ways of suppressing my tics and certain techniques to help [reduce] them when I don’t want to be distracting in certain situations,” she wrote. “But again, suppressing them only makes things worse after the moment is over.”
Eilish claimed that she never revealed her condition to the public because she “never wanted people to think of tourettes [every time] they think of me.” She stated that she felt compelled to speak up now since the conversation had “gotten a certain point.”
Rather than being offended by the compilation videos, Eilish shrugged them off, noting that they are “low-key funny.”
According to the Tourette Association of America, one out of every 100 school-aged children suffers with Tourette Syndrome or a related Tic Disorder. Because the intensity of Tourette Syndrome ranges from hardly perceptible tics to tics that may be humiliating and unpleasant, each person’s treatment is unique. People with Tourette’s may, in many situations, lead completely normal lives and, like Eilish, pursue their aspirations despite their disease.
In October, Eilish’s first single “Ocean Eyes” went viral, and she’s been on the rise ever since, earning Forbes’ annual “30 Under 30” list in November.
