‘My Dog Saved Me From Suicide’ – Actor Mickey Rourke

During his low moment, Mickey Rourke admitted to ‘picking up a gun’ and contemplating suicide.

Rourke said that his dog, Beau Jack, saved his life when the Chihuahua prevented him from killing himself during an interview at the Los Angeles premiere of the documentary “Eating Happiness” on Nov. 1.

He told reporters, “I was going through a really rough time. I was hurting myself and I was sitting in the closet one day. I couldn’t take it anymore and picked up a gun.”

The actor, who has six dogs, stated that if it weren’t for his canine companions, he would have gone forward with his plan.

“I was deciding what part of my head to put it on and my dog, Beau Jack, cried and I looked over and he looked up at me like this and… he said [with his eyes], who’s going to look after me? And it made me put the gun down. I was ready to go,” he continued.

The 63-year-old actor also said that he gets along better with dogs than with people, which is why he loves them so much. In 2009, when he won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture for his part in “The Wrestler,” he said as much in his acceptance speech. “Sometimes when a man’s alone, that’s all you got is your dog. And they’ve meant the world to me,” he stated.

His dog, Beau Jack, died of a heart attack in 2002, according to the New York Times. Rourke even attempted mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on the dog, but it was unsuccessful.

Maybe that’s why he agreed to participate in “Eating Happiness,” a documentary on dog meat production.

“I sort of self-destructed and everything came out about 14 years ago or so,” he told Barbara Walters on ABC of the dark times. “The wife had left, the career was over, the money was not an ounce. The dogs were there when no one else was there.”

During that interview, he did say, however, that he had not considered suicide.

“Yeah I didn’t want to be here, but I didn’t want to kill myself. I just wanted to push a button and disappear… I think I hadn’t left the house for four or five months, and I was sitting in the closet–sleeping in the closet for some reason.”

Rourke just finished filming for the next film Weaponized, which will be released in 2016. Tom Sizemore, Johnny Messner, and Taylor Cole also feature in the film.
