Hilary Duff struggled to fit in as a teen

At 18, Hilary Duff was a renowned Hollywood actress, fresh from her Lizzie McGuire stint on Disney Channel, and starring in films like A Cinderella Story and Cheaper by the Dozen. Her music career was also taking off.

However, Duff faced challenges with food and body image behind the scenes.

Speaking with Byrdie, the 30-year-old actress revealed her past struggles with food during her teen years and how she learned to prioritize health over size.

“When I was 18 or 19, I had some struggles with food, trying to fit into an ‘image’ that wasn’t me,” Duff admitted.

“But that was a long time ago. Now, I feel like I’m in the same five- to 10-pound battle as most other women.”

“Sometimes I’m doing great, and other times I’m thinking, ‘Ugh, I love to cook.’”

Duff gained body confidence after giving birth to her son, Luca, in 2012, and started to appreciate her body’s capabilities rather than taking them for granted.

“I’m 5’2’’ and I’m not a ‘skinny girl,’ I’m a healthy girl,” she shared.

“I feel empowered by what my body can do—having babies, getting pregnant, or playing with Luca. He’s 45 pounds, and I can carry him around and chase him. I’m so grateful for my strong body.”

Though not completely immune to body-image pressures, Duff has become more self-aware about distinguishing between normal insecurities and those that are detrimental to her health.

“Image is something we’re all conscious of because it’s always discussed, which can be disappointing but also helps you be more in tune with yourself—your behavior, body, and happiness,” she explained.

“All of these factors are interconnected. I feel like I have a healthy relationship with myself, knowing when I’m being ‘bad’ or ‘good’ health-wise, and both are necessary for my lifestyle and happiness, to maintain balance.”

Body insecurities affect everyone, regardless of fame. It’s heartening to see Duff overcome her eating issues and learn to appreciate her body for what it is. Kudos, Hilary.
