Why Sean Connery ‘hated’ James Bond after playing him seven times

Sean Connery was a talented actor who starred in over 60 films throughout the course of his career, but he will always be remembered for his portrayal of James Bond. Connery became a Hollywood star as a result of the performance, and it paved the way for him to play numerous roles in the future. However, the actor later came to regret his role.

The Scottish actor, who died at the age of 90, initially played James Bond in 1962’s Dr No and returned six times until 1983’s Never Say Never Again.

Connery got irritated by the fact that he was only ever recognized for his Bond character.

As a result, the actor retaliated against the imaginary character.

The Scottish-born actor once screamed, “I have always hated that damned James Bond. I’d like to kill him.”

Connery’s buddy Michael Caine recently remarked that the actor was upset by the way he became “synonymous with Bond,” elaborating on Connery’s dissatisfaction with the character.

“If you were his friend in these early days you didn’t raise the subject of Bond. He was, and is, a much better actor than just playing James Bond, but he became synonymous with Bond,” Caine said (via The Wall Street Journal). “He’d be walking down the street and people would say, ‘Look, there’s James Bond.’ That was particularly upsetting to him.”

In 1964, Connery told The New York Times, “I would never deny that Bond made me, and I’ll be everlastingly grateful to him.”

He wasn’t the only one to criticize the mythical hero.

Connery donated his salary from his final Eon movie, Diamonds are Forever, a figure of well over $1 million.

Connery is survived by Micheline Roquebrune, his wife of 45 years, his son Jason, and his brother Neil.

Connery also spoke openly about his frustrations with the role of Bond in 2002.

“Well, once you had done the first two [films], you just moved forward because the rules were established,” he explained.

“One wound up doing less and less as it were, because you did what you were expected to do and whatever else up to a point.”

Sean’s relationship with the franchise was a love-hate one, with disputes with his bosses, battles over salary, and deep-seated privacy issues.

Sir Sean was reportedly unhappy with the sudden interest in his life after the spectacular success of Dr No, and it was stated that he thought he wasn’t getting paid enough and requested more money, only to be met with a flat no.

When Sean was photographed in the toilet while filming You Only Live Twice, his fifth picture in five years, another feud erupted.

Connery stopped performing in 2006 after decades on screen. After that, he spent much of his life away from the spotlight, settling in Nassau, Bahamas, with his wife Micheline Roquebrune. According to an interview his wife gave to The Daily Mail, he died there “peacefully” in his sleep on Friday, Oct. 30. Connery died at the age of 90.
