Why Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter are beefing

Olivia Rodrigo has been making waves in the music world following the release of her debut album, “Sour.”

Fans have been speculating that some of her songs may be about her supposed beef with Sabrina Carpenter, a former Disney Channel star.

To understand the situation, let’s take a look at the background of this story.

Before the release of “Sour,” Rodrigo dropped her first single, “Driver’s License.”

It quickly garnered attention, with many assuming that the song was about her rumored relationship with her “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” co-star, Joshua Bassett. Bassett was reportedly in a relationship with Carpenter at the time.

In the song, Rodrigo sings about a blonde girl who is “everything I’m insecure about.” This has led fans to believe that the song was about Carpenter, who is a blonde.

Rodrigo’s song also throws shade at Bassett.

In the lyrics, she sings, “I just can’t imagine how you could be so OK now that I’m gone/ Guess you didn’t mean what you wrote in that song about me.”

This was in reference to Bassett’s song, “Anyone Else,” which was released six months prior to “Driver’s License.”

While fans have speculated that “Driver’s License” is about Carpenter, Rodrigo has not confirmed these claims.

In an interview with Billboard, she said, “I totally understand people’s curiosity with the specifics of who the song’s about and what it’s about, but to me, that’s really the least important part of the song.”

She went on to say that the song resonates with people because of its emotional content and that everything else is not important.

Carpenter initially stayed quiet about the drama. However, as Rodrigo’s fans attacked her online, she responded with her song “Skin.”

In the song, Carpenter sings, “You been telling your side/ So I’ll be telling mine.” She goes on to say, “You’re telling it how you see it/ Like truth is whatever you decide.”

Carpenter has since clarified that the song “isn’t calling out one single person.”

In an Instagram post (which has since been deleted), she stated, “I wasn’t bothered by a few lines in a (magnificent) song and wrote a diss track about it.”

She explained that she was at a tipping point in her life for various reasons and that she wrote the song as a way to cope.

However, a few months later, Carpenter appeared to address the situation again in another single, “because i liked a boy.”

In the song, she sings about being called a “homewrecker” and a “slut,” as well as receiving death threats.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Carpenter explained that the song “came from a really real place in [her] life” and that it was therapeutic to write it from hindsight.

Carpenter has previously kept details of her personal life out of the spotlight.

Her only confirmed relationship was with fellow Disney alum, Bradley Steven Perry.

After their relationship ended in 2015, she was linked to Bassett, but the relationship was never confirmed.

Bassett’s relationship with Rodrigo has also never been confirmed. However, fans have speculated that they had a relationship.
