Why Emilia Clarke turned down ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ After ‘Game Of Thrones’

Emilia Clarke has confessed that she is “sick and tired” of being questioned about her Game of Thrones n-ked scenes, and that this was one of the reasons she passed down the lead part in Fifty Shades of Grey. She didn’t want to be “pigeonholed for life.”

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the actress explains that, despite loving Fifty Shades director Sam Taylor-Johnson’s “beautiful” vision for the film, she ultimately decided not to do it so as not to be pigeonholed. The film is an adaptation of author E.L. James’ story about a college senior who gets into a BDSM relationship with a billionaire.

Clarke said, “Well, Sam is a magician. I love her, and I thought her vision was beautiful. But the last time that I was n-ked on camera on [Game of Thrones] was a long time ago, and yet it is the only question that I ever get asked because I am a woman. And it’s annoying as hell and I’m sick and tired of it because I did it for the character — I didn’t do it so some guy could check out my t*ts, for God’s sake. So, that coming up, I was like, ‘I can’t.’ I did a minimal amount and I’m pigeonholed for life, so me saying yes to that, where the entire thing is about sensuality and sex and being n-ked and all of that stuff, I was just like, ‘No way am I going to voluntarily walk into that situation and then never be able to look someone in the eye and be like, “No, you can’t keep asking me this question.”‘”

Dakota Johnson was eventually cast in the role of Anastasia, while Jamie Dornan was cast in the role of billionaire Christian Grey.

According to People, the film grossed $166 million in the United States and $571 million worldwide, generating the sequels “Fifty Shades Darker” and “Fifty Shades Freed.”

Clarke, who played Daenerys Targaryen on HBO’s Game of Thrones, went n-de onscreen a few times over the show’s eight-season run. The scene in season 6 when she fled her Dothraki captors n-ked, surrounded by fire, was perhaps the most memorable.

At the time, the actress told EW that she was proud of her choice to do the sequence. “I’d like to remind people the last time I took my clothes off was season 3,” she remarked. “That was awhile ago. It’s now season 6. But this is all me, all proud, all strong. I’m just feeling genuinely happy I said ‘Yes.’ That ain’t no body double!”

She recently bid her character farewell as the show came to a stunning close.

The actress claimed the part had “taken up the whole of [her] adult life” in an Instagram homage.

“This woman has taken up the whole of my heart,” she wrote.
